FERRIS STATE WOMEN’S SOCCER SIGNS TWO RECRUITS
Madison Kitchen and Lauren Fortuna To Join The Bulldogs For 2009 Season
Ferris State University women's soccer head coach Neathan Gibson has announced the signings of two in-state high school recruits as Madison "Maddy" Kitchen (Sterling Heights/Stevenson) and Lauren Fortuna (Macomb/Stering Heights Henry Ford II) will enroll at FSU this fall and suit for the 2009 Bulldogs.
Kitchen, a 5-3 defender, received Division I all-state honorable mention and all region honors during her junior year at Adlai Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights, Mich. A four-year starter, Kitchen earned all-district and all-county accolades under head coach Bob Mondoux and was selected as the 2008 squad's top defender.
As a junior in 2008, Kitchen helped the 18-4-3 Titans a regional championship match appearance after the team had claimed its second consecutive district tournament crown. In her 2007 sophomore campaign, ASHS advanced to the regional championship contest and concluded the campaign at 15-3-4 overall. Kitchen served as team captain for the 2006 volleyball squad during her freshman season.
Kitchen has participated in club soccer for the Bloomfield Force since 2006 and previously spent two seasons (2004 and 2005) as a member of the Michigan Gators. She has been active in the sport since about age five.
Kitchen, the daughter of Greg and Leslie Kitchen of Sterling Heights, Mich., will graduate in 2009 and plans to major in criminal justice at Ferris State.
"Maddy is a tough hard working defender who has the potential to do very well in the GLIAC," said Gibson, who will enter his fourth season at Ferris State this fall. "I am excited to have Maddy join our back line giving us the physical strength and speed we need to get forward out of the back. She is going to do well!"
Fortuna, a 5-8 forward, will be competing in her fourth and final year of girls' soccer at Sterling Heights' (Mich.) Henry Ford II High School under head coach Stacy Rogers. Besides soccer, Fortuna is involved in several of her school's organizations such as the French Club, Key Club, Peer Mediation, Falcon Fanatics Club, and also has served as a freshmen mentor. She will graduate in 2009 and will pursue a secondary english education degree at FSU.
Fortuna has been active in club soccer since 2005 and was a teammate of Kitchen's on the 2005 Michigan Gators team. She also played for the NMSC (2007-08) and the Rochester Soccer Club (2008-09). Lauren is the daughter of Tony and Susan Fortuna of Macomb, Mich.
"Lauren is a fast front runner that can finish goals from anyway," said Gibson. "She is very athletic and strong with a forwards feistyness to get the ball in the back of the net. Lauren possesses a great competitive attitude and is also going to be a lovely addition to our Bulldog Pack!"
The Bulldogs wrapped up the 2008 campaign with a 9-9-1 overall record and a fourth-place tying 8-7-1 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Ferris State earned a berth in the GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament for the second consecutive year in the 2008 season and advanced to the conference tournament's semifinal round.
