FERRIS SUFFERS NARROW CONFERENCE HOME SETBACK TO TIFFIN
Renee Cain's second goal of the match with less than six minutes remaining snapped a 1-1 tie to give Tiffin a 2-1 victory over the Ferris State women's soccer team Friday (Oct. 17) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 5-7-1 overall on the season and 4-5-1 in the GLIAC. FSU closes out the home portion of its 2008 regular-season schedule this Sunday (Oct. 19) as the Bulldogs play host the Findlay Oilers in a 12 p.m. (EDT) conference match at Big Rapids.
Cain gave Tiffin the lead in the first half as she tallied her sixth goal of the season at 27:53 on a shot from the left side of Ferris State goal.
Ferris State would proceed to tie the contest at 1-1 in the second half as freshman midfielder Maegan Smith (Hickory Corners/Kalamazoo Christian) scored her fourth of the season off a corner kick by sophomore defender Kristen March (Canton/Plymouth Salem) at 75:40. Smith scored in her second straight match to date by deflecting the ball to the far post which caromed off the goal post into the Tiffin goal.
But, the Dragons would strike for the second and final time of the contest at 84:48 as Cain took a through ball from Jillian McGonigal, who also assisted on the first TU marker, and fired a shot from right side into far post. Cain was able to track the ball down for a breakaway tally which marked her seventh goal of this season.
Ferris State was outshot 20-15 in the match, but did manage five corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) totaled six stops in 90 minutes for Ferris State while Abby Grieser made eight saves for Tiffin (11-3-0; 7-3-0 GLIAC).
