SMITH'S GOAL LIFTS FSU TO GLIAC WIN AT SAGINAW VALLEY STATE

Freshman Maegan Smith's fifth goal of the year also represented Ferris State's game-winning tally.
Freshman forward Maegan Smith (Hickory Corners/Kalamazoo Christian) picked an opportune time to register her fifth goal of this season as she scored unassisted with five minutes left in regulation as Ferris State topped Saginaw Valley State, 3-2, Friday (Oct. 24) afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match play at the SVSU Complex in University Center, Mich.

The victory, which is Ferris State's third in its last four matches, improves the Bulldogs overall record to 7-7-1 this fall. FSU is now 6-5-1 in conference match play to date.

Senior forward Tammy Unsworth (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the first half as she tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 44th minute on an assist from freshman defender Mekyla Spraggins (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central).

Following intermission, Saginaw Valley State would tie the contest at 1-1 as Kim Oberski scored for the host team at 57:43. However, the Bulldogs regained the upper hand at the 73:11 mark as senior defender Julia Zilan (Wixom)posted her first goal of the season on an Unsworth assist.

Saginaw Valley State, which outshot the Bulldogs by a 22-11 margin, would convert a penalty kick at 75:28 with Stephanie Roy producing the Cardinal goal. But, Ferris State would have the final say as Smith registered an unassisted marker at 84:26 for the game-winning tally.

Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) recorded the win for the Bulldogs with 11 saves in 90 minutes of action while Missy Fredrick made five stops for SVSU.

Ferris State had two corner kicks in the match while Saginaw Valley State compiled five in the contest, all in the opening half.
