FSU SOCCER HOLDS WILDCATS SCORELESS IN GLIAC HOME WIN
Ferris State scored three times in the second half as the Bulldogs handed Northern Michigan a 3-0 loss Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
Freshman midfielder Maegan Smith (Hickery Corners/Kalamazoo Christian) tallied twice in the second half within a five-minute span to snap a scoreless tie and propel Ferris State (5-6-1; 4-4-1 GLIAC) to a regular-season sweep of the Wildcats. Smith netted her second goal of the season at 46:56 after taking a nice through ball from senior midfielder Brandy Tarnowsky (Roseville/Bishop Foley Catholic) and placing the ball into the far side netting. Smith would then find the NMU goal again at 51:08 by pounding the ball at Wildcat goalkeeper Kara Music. The right-side shot dribbled off Music's hands into the Wildcat net for a 2-0 Bulldog lead. Sophomore defender Kristen March (Canton/Plymouth Salem) set up the second FSU goal by collecting the ball at the top of the box and feeding a pass to the end line where Smith fought through a Wildcat defender.
The Bulldogs would tack on an insurance goal at 74:33 when freshman midfielder Nicole Vick (Macomb/Eisenhower) chipped the ball from 25 yards out over the outstretched hands of Music for her first collegiate score. Vick took a pass from junior midfielder Katie Sterling (Livonia/Stevenson) to set up the final tally.
Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) notched the win with nine saves and Music made four stops for the Wildcats.
Northern Michigan held an 18-14 shots advantage, including a 8-4 edge in the second period. NMU had three corner kicks to Ferris' two match total.
