FSU WOMEN'S SOCCER DROPS NARROW DECISION
The FSU women's soccer team put forth a solid effort but came up short in a 2-1 non-conference loss to Lewis Sunday (Sept. 7) at the Lewis Soccer Field in Romeoville, Ill.
The first half was scoreless as the Flyers recorded five shots to the Bulldogs' three total. Lewis would strike first in the second half as Courtney Kettel tallied seven minutes into the stanza on a uncharacteristic goal. Kettel put a shot on the FSU goal from 22 yards away which Ferris State sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) made the initial save but the ball bounded up and hit the crossbar. The ball then came down just left to Houdek and bounced towards the Ferris net. Houdek extended her left hand and batted it away, but not before it just barely entered the net for first goal of the match.
The Bulldogs would put the fluke goal behind them scoring seven minutes later. Freshman midfielder Maegan Smith (Hickory Corners/Kalamazoo Christian) scored unassisted for her first collegiate marker to knot the game at 1-1. Smith lofted the ball over Lewis goalkeeper Megan George's head from 10 yards out directly in front of the Flyers' goal.
The contest remained tied until the 71st minute when Lewis freshman Jordyn McMahon netted her first collegiate goal for the winning score. McMahon tallied on a kick close to the Bulldog goal after taking a cross pass from the far right side of the field.
The host Flyers concluded the match with a 9-6 edge in shots and a 5-2 shots on goal advantage.
Becci Houdek made three saves for Ferris State, which is now 1-2 overall for the season.
