Ferris State falls to 1-3-0 and 0-1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) this fall with the conference-opening loss while Grand Valley State improved to 6-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the league.
Both teams had to contend with wet field conditions as a steady rain throughout the contest made for slippery conditions.
The Lakers, who attempted 17 shots in the first half, got the scoring started at 8:36 when Irie Dennis connected on a shot off the right post to claim a 1-0 lead after the opening half.
GVSU came out in the second 45 minutes to tack on two more scores. Katy Tafler tallied on a header off a corner kick by Joyce Rose at 56:45 and then in the 82nd minute, Erika Pitroff took a loose ball and kicked a long shot from the top of 18-yard box into the Bulldog net for an unassisted goals as the visitors went on to record 19 shots to FSU's four in the stanza.
Grand Valley State held a decisive advantage in shots (36-9) and corner kicks (11-2).
Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) turned in a season-high 15 saves for Ferris State while Kristina Nasturzio made four stops for the Lakers.
