BULLDOGS WIN REGULAR-SEASON HOME FINALE IN OVERTIME
Freshman forward Bri Borgman's (Holland/West Ottawa) scored on a penalty-kick goal in overtime to lead the Ferris State women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Findlay Sunday (Oct. 19) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
|Senior Jackie Back helped lead Ferris State to a win in its 2008 regular-season home finale.
Borgman, who posted her fourth goal of the year with the game winner, took the penalty kick for Ferris State just 1:45 into the overtime period. The Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick as a result of the Oilers being whistled for a tripping foul in the goal box. Borgman lined up the ball in the center of the box and drilled the ball into the right-side of the net past the diving UF goalkeeper.
The contest, which represented the Bulldogs' regular-season home finale, saw neither team score in the first half. Senior forward Tammy Unsworth (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) netted her fifth goal of the season at 52:01 of the second half on an assist by junior defender Stevie Salow (Saginaw/Heritage). Unsworth chipped the ball at the UF net which hit the crossbar and caromed down going past the goal line.
Findlay came back to tie the contest at 1-1 on a Ashley Ruz goal at the 64:50 mark which would send the match into the 10-minute overtime session.
Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) turned aside 12 shots for Ferris State in the win while Alicia Tutino made three stops in taking the loss for Findlay.
Findlay compiled 18 shots in the match to Ferris' 12 total while each team registered two corner kicks apiece.
Following the match, the FSU women's soccer program paid tribute to its five senior student-athletes -- defenders Jackie Back (Ortonville/Ortonville-Brandon), Chelsy Wagner (Ann Arbor/Pioneer), and Julia Zilan (Wixom) along with midfielder Brandy Tarnowsky (Roseville/Bishop Foley Catholic) and forward Tammy Unsworth.
