WOMEN'S SOCCER NETS CONFERENCE HOME WIN OVER ASHLAND
Goals by senior Tammy Unsworth (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) and freshman Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) proved enough as the Ferris State women's soccer team held on for a 2-1 victory over Ashland Friday (Sept. 19) afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match play at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
The win improves Ferris State's record to 2-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the GLIAC to date this fall.
The host Bulldogs came out of the gate strong, accounting for the first half's lone tally. At the 11:48 mark, senior forward Tammy Unsworth scored unassisted for her first goal of this season. The FSU co-captain took a shot from the left side which found its way into the far post giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead after the opening 45 minutes of action. Sophomore goalkeeper Becci Houdek (Canton) did her job in net with several key saves throughout the stanza as the Eagles had 12 in the first half.
FSU recharged in the second half and scored what proved to be the eventual game winner in the 51st minute as freshman Bri Borgman took a cross pass from senior defender Julia Zilan (Wixom) and knocked in a one timer past AU goalkeeper Krista Herbst.
However, the Eagles would cut the deficit at 74:01 on a free kick by Courtney Schuster which went off the fingertips of Houdek into the FSU goal. But, the Bulldogs stepped up their play defensively with solid defense and held on for their first conference win of the 2008 campaign.
For the match, Ashland held the advantage in shots (21-16). Houdek stopped 15 shots for Ferris while Herbst had five saves for the Eagles.
