SAGINAW NATIVE STEPHANIE SALOW COMMITS TO FERRIS STATE

Heritage High School Product Added To Bulldogs’ 2006 Recruiting Class

The Ferris State University women's soccer program has signed Stephanie “Stevie” Salow (Saginaw/Heritage) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play soccer at FSU, starting with the fall 2006 season. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs' third-year head coach Melissa Lalonde.

The 5-6 Salow, who’s a defender, received honorable mention all-state accolades for Saginaw’s Heritage High School as a junior during the spring 2005 campaign. Last year’s recognition represented the second time she’s earned the distinction in her prep career as she also was honored in 2004. She’s currently preparing to play her prep senior season this spring for the Hawks.

Stevie Salow “I’m really excited to have Stevie join our team,” said Lalonde. “She’s a fantastic defender and has a great personality. In addition, she has a strong field presence with her ability to read the play, win balls in the air, regain possession and generate an attack.”

The three-year letterwinner helped guided Heritage to a second consecutive Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class A district championship last season. The squad also won its second Saginaw Valley League (SVL) crown in the last three years to date as Salow claimed all-conference laurels for the second time in her career.

“Stevie’s competitive mentality and willingness to perform on the edge will certainly add to the makeup to our team,” Lalonde said.

A two-time (2004-05) all-area first team honoree, Salow has started each of the last three campaigns on the defensive side for the Hawks. She was chosen as the squad’s Coaches Award recipient in 2004 and will serve as team captain this spring under head coach Dr. George Carty.

Besides soccer, Salow has also earned three varsity letters as a member of the school’s basketball and volleyball teams. Both the Hawks’ basketball and volleyball squads have won district championships during her playing career. She was an all-conference second team pick in volleyball as a junior (2004-05).

Salow’s club level soccer experience includes five years with the Saginaw Rockers and two seasons with the Michigan Hawks Red organization. She has also been active in her school’s student council and student assembly organizations in addition to serving as a mentor for the Leaders Improving Freshmen Transitions (LIFT) program.

The daughter of John and Debbie Salow, Stephanie plans to major in business administration at Ferris State. She joins twin sisters Kirstin and Kacie Lumley (Traverse City/Central) along with Allyson Smilanich (Kalamazoo/Christian) as current members of FSU’s 2006 recruiting class.

The Bulldogs wrapped up the 2005 campaign with an 11-7 overall record and a fourth place 5-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). FSU's 11 victories during the 2005 season tied for the program's most wins in school history. Ferris won 10 of its final 14 outings in 2005.
