Ferris State Women's Soccer Notes

Aug. 29, 2006

The Ferris State women's soccer team opened the 2006 campaign with a 3-2 come from behind win over regional foe Southern Indiana last Friday (Aug. 25) in the Grand Valley State Laker Tournament at Allendale, Mich. Ferris then suffered a 3-0 non-league setback to Tiffin (Ohio) in its final match of the event Saturday (Aug. 26).

Ferris sophomore forward Tammy Unsworth (White Lake/Walled Lake Northern) notched two unassisted goals, including the game winner in the win over USI. The Bulldogs trailed 2-1 before Unsworth scored twice in the final half for Ferris. She had six shots and three shots on goal in Ferris' two outings at the event.

Senior goalkeeper Carla Gilbertson (Waunakee, Wis.) played the entire 180 minutes in net for FSU this past weekend and recorded 14 saves. She has 269 career saves to date and is 43 away from matching Alana Dombrowski's school-record total of 312 saves. Gilbertson's 26 career wins in net already represent the highest figure in school history.

Friday's win represented the first career coaching victory for FSU interim head coach Neathan Gibson. Gibson, who has a wide array of various coaching and playing experience at the international level, will serve on an interim basis until the conclusion of the fall season when a nationwide search for a permanent replacement will begin.

Gibson filled the position vacated by the relocation of the school's all-time winningest coach, Melissa Lalonde. Her husband, former Ferris assistant men's ice hockey coach Derek Lalonde, recently accepted a position as an assistant hockey coach at the University of Denver (Colo.).

FSU's victory over USI represented the school's second-ever win over the Screaming Eagles. All three series' meetings have came in the GVSU Laker Tourney as Ferris won the initial encounter in 2004 by a 2-1 count before USI defeated FSU 2-1 in the event last campaign.

Ferris returns 12 letterwinners and seven starters from last season. The squad's leading returning scorer from last year is junior forward Heather O'Keefe (Ada/Forest Hills Central), who totaled six goals and four assists for 16 total points last year.

Ferris had fewer fouls than its opponent in both of last weekend's outings. The Bulldogs netted six fouls against USI and eight versus Tiffin. The Screaming Eagles recorded 21 fouls while the Dragons had 14 in their win over Ferris.

Tammy Unsworth's two goals against USI marked the second time in her career she has tallied two goals in a single outing. Unsworth also netted a pair of markers in last year's 3-1 league home triumph over Mercyhurst (10/9/05).

The Bulldogs wrapped up the 2005 campaign with an 11-7 overall record and a fourth place 5-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). FSU's 11 victories during the 2005 season tied for the program's most wins in school history. Ferris won 10 of its final 14 outings in 2005 under Lalonde, who concluded her three-year tenure with a 31-21-2 overall record.

Ferris State will host seven home contests this campaign at the FSU Varsity Soccer Field. The Bulldogs' first home encounter is a non-conference outing against Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) this Sunday, Sept. 3, starting at 12 p.m. (EDT). FSU will then host Calvin Tuesday, Sept. 5, in a 4:30 p.m. (EDT) non-conference home contest.

Sunday's outing against Wheeling Jesuit marks the first-ever series' matchup between the two schools. The Cardinals, who will visit Grand Valley State for a non-conference tilt Saturday (Sept. 2) in Allendale, are presently 1-1 overall this season under head coach Carrie Hanna. Last season (2005), the squad recorded a 20-4 overall mark and captured the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) Championship.

Calvin opens the 2006 campaign this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1-2, by taking part in the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Soccer Classic in Bloomington, Ill. Sixth-year head coach Mark Recker's squad posted a 16-3-2 overall mark a season ago and won the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title. The two teams have split two previous series' encounters with Ferris winning the inaugural tilt 3-1 at Big Rapids in 2003. Calvin posted a 2-0 home win over FSU in 2004 at Grand Rapids, Mich.
