Ferris State Teams Place Sixth At GLIAC Championships

ThThe Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams both took sixth place in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held Thursday and Friday (May 5-6) at Grand Valley State's Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldog women's team registered 64.50 points in the 10-team field while the men's squad totaled 44.50 points in their nine-team division. Meet host Grand Valley State won both the women's and men's team titles with 259 and 220.50 points, respectively.

Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) led the women's squad with a pair of runner-up performances. She placed second in both the 1,500 meters (4:34.90) and the 3,000 meters (10:11.17) to earn all-conference accolades in each event.

Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) also claimed All-GLIAC honors with a second-place effort in the shot put (46-6.75) as did junior Jessica Gladding (Fenwick/Central Montcalm), who finished third in the discus (126-3). Senior Sharon Smith (Inkster) took third place in the 100-meter dash (12.45) as the top three individual performers in each event picked up all-league recognition.

Smith also was fourth in the 200 meters (25.77), sophomore Ashley Farr (Detroit/King) placed fourth in the 400 meters (57.32) and junior Leanna Wolf (Fountain/Mason County Central) finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:14.19).

Senior Michele Vanderhyde (Howard City/Tri-County) recorded a seventh-place performance in the pole vault (10-4), freshman Dia Price (Mt. Morris/Beecher) took seventh place in the triple jump (34-11) and senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) placed eighth in the 10,000 meters (39:20.13). Freshman Stephanie Root (Ludington/Mason County Central) tied for eighth place in the high jump (5-1.25).

The Bulldog women's team also finished fifth in both the 4x100-meter (50.60) and 4x400-meter (3:58.08) relays.

Senior Kurt Peterson (St. Louis) sparked the men's team by placing among the top eight finishers in four events. He earned all-conference laurels with a third-place showing in the pole vault (14-3.25) and also was seventh in the javelin (156-3), eighth in the long jump (21-0) along with eighth in the triple jump (42-0.75).

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) received All-GLIAC honors in two events as he took third place in both the 200 meters (22.26) and the long jump (22-4.25). Schuberg also placed fifth in the 100 meters (11.17).

Freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) registered all-league kudos by taking third place in the high jump (6-5.50), senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) placed fifth in the pole vault (14-3.25) and junior Brent Harkness (Jamestown, N.Y.) finished sixth in the pole vault (13-9.25).

Mielke also tied for sixth place in the long jump (21-4.75) while the Bulldog men took sixth place in the 4x100-meter relay (44.94).

Selected squad members will compete in the North Central (Ill.) Dr. Keeler Invitational Friday, May 13, in Naperville, Ill.

Ferris State Competes In 39th Annual Hillsdale Gina Relays

The Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed in the 39th annual Hillsdale Gina Relays Friday and Saturday (April 29-30) at HC's Ken Herrick Track in Hillsdale, Mich.

The non-scoring field included athletes from schools at a variety of levels, including NCAA Division I.

The Bulldog women's team recorded top 10 performances in six different events. Junior Jenny Irwin (Scottville/Mason County Central) highlighted the effort with a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:30.11).

Freshman Kamitra Carroll (Flint/Carman-Ainsworth) took fourth place in the shot put (47-3), senior Mary Miller (Sault Ste. Marie) finished ninth in the 3,000 meters (10:53.83) and senior Sharon Smith (Inkster/Oak Park) was 10th in the 100 meters (12.39).

The FSU women's team also finished seventh in the 4x400-meter relay (4:07.28) and placed 10th in the 4x100-meter relay (49.80).

Freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) led the men's team by tying for third place in the high jump (6-8).

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) was fifth in the 200 meters (22.19), 11th in the 100 meters (11.11) and 16th in the long jump (21-10.75).

Senior Kurt Peterson (St. Louis) took ninth place in the triple jump (40-11) and tied for 10th place in the pole vault (14-0).

The Bulldogs also captured 14th place in the men's 4x100-meter relay (44.62) and finished 17th in the 4x400-meter relay (3:37.77).

Ferris State will take part in the 2005 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday and Friday, May 5-6, in Allendale, Mich. The meet will be hosted by Grand Valley State with Thursday's opening events set to begin at 3 p.m. (EDT).

Saturday's Northwood Invitational Cancelled

The Ferris State University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams were to take part in the Northwood Invitational Saturday, April 23, in Midland, Mich. However, the meet has been cancelled due to the weather forecast for Saturday in Midland.

The forecast is calling for a temperature of 35 degrees, 30 mph winds and three to five inches of snow for the area.

Selected FSU women's student-athletes will instead compete in Friday's (April 22) Eastern Michigan Twilight meet beginning at 3 p.m. (EDT) in Ypsilanti, Mich. Ferris State will then take part in the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays next Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, in Hillsdale, Mich.

Bulldog Finish Fourth At Saginaw Valley State Invitational

The Ferris State University men's outdoor track and field team took fourth place in Saturday's (April 16) Saginaw Valley State Collegiate Invitational held at University Center, Mich.

The Bulldogs tallied 76 points. SVSU won the men's division with 203 points, Siena Heights took second (121) and Aquinas placed third (98.50) among 12 teams. FSU had 14 performances place in the top six overall.

Senior Kurt Peterson (St. Louis) earned runner-up accolades in the triple jump (40-8) and placed fourth in the pole vault (14-0). Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) was third in the triple jump (38-9), junior Corey Peyerk (Marysville) finished third in the 800 meters (1:59.94) and freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) recorded a third-place effort in the long jump (20-6.25) along with tying for fourth place in the high jump (6-4).

Freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) took fourth place in the 5,000 meters (15:12.34), sophomore Darryl Glashauser (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (59.27) and freshman Adam Brown (McMillan/Newberry) captured fifth place in the pole vault (13-6). Freshman Chad Menefee (Sand Lake/Cedar Springs) placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.93).

In the men's throwing events, junior Tom Swartwood (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) received fourth place kudos in the discus (131-3) and finished tied for sixth place in the shot put (44-10). Sophomore Chad Hanson (Dearborn/Edsel Ford) placed sixth in both the hammer throw (139-2) and the discus (125-5).

Ferris State will next take part in the Northwood Invitational Saturday, April 23, beginning at 11 a.m. (EDT) in Midland, Mich.

Ferris Wins Two Events In Annual Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University men's outdoor track and field team hosted the annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday (April 9) at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The non-scoring meet included athletes from Grand Valley State, Lake Superior State, Cornerstone, Saginaw Valley State, Northwood, Calvin, Aquinas and Michigan Tech among other schools.

Ferris received first-place efforts in two men's events in addition to earning two runner-up performances. Freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) won the 1,500 meters (3:53.87), freshman Adam Brown (McMillan/Newberry) claimed the pole vault (14-0) and senior Kurt Peterson (St. Louis) was second in the vault (13-6).

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) placed second in the long jump (22-9), captured fourth place in the 100 meters (11.62) and was fifth overall in the 200 meters (22.72).

Freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) earned third-place kudos in the high jump (6-6) while sophomore Darryl Glashauser (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) took sixth place in the javelin (148-8).

The Bulldogs will return to action by competing in the Saginaw Valley State Invitational Saturday, April 16, in University Center, Mich. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (EDT).

Ferris Takes Fourth Place At Saint Joseph's Invitational

The Ferris State University men's outdoor track and field team took part in the second annual Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Gene and Rose Edmonds Invitational held Saturday (April 2) in Rensselaer, Ind.

The Bulldogs placed fourth of five teams with 84 points on the day. Saginaw Valley claimed the men’s title with 200 points. The men’s team tallied 16 efforts among the top six place winners.

They were led by freshman Jared Kelsh’s (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) first-place performance in the 800 meters (1:59.16) and freshman Adam Brown’s (McMillan/Newberry) championship effort in the pole vault (13-0). Brown also placed fifth in the javelin (138-0).

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) was second in the 200 meters (23.68), freshman Phil Doyle (Zeeland) placed third in the 400 meters (53.19) and junior Corey Peyerk (Marysville) finished fourth in the 400 meters (53.56). Sophomore Darryl Glashauser (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) took third place in the 110-meter hurdles (15.78), fourth place in the javelin (146-6) and fifth place in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.24).

Freshman Chad Menefee (Sand Lake/Cedar Springs) placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.49) and sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.64). Junior Bryan Dyer (Waterford/Kettering) was fifth in the shot put (43-7), sophomore Chad Hanson (Dearborn/Edsel Ford) captured fifth place honors in the hammer throw (145-0) and sophomore Justin Barts (Richland/Gull Lake) earned sixth-place kudos in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:36.45). FSU also finished third in the men’s 4x400-meter relay (3:31.69) and fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (45.03).

Ferris State will host the annual Bulldog Invitational Saturday, April 9, beginning at 12 p.m. (EDT). The meet will be held at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

Bulldogs Place Seventh Overall At GLIAC Indoor Championships

The Ferris State University men's track and field team placed seventh overall at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championships held Friday and Saturday (Feb. 25-26) in University Center, Mich.

The men's team registered 31 points in finishing seventh overall. GVSU also won the men's division (192 points), Ashland was second (113.5) and Saginaw Valley State placed third (82.5).

Freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) met the national provisional qualifying standard with a third-place finish in the mile run (4:15.19), senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) recorded a third-place effort in the pole vault (14-11) and freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) earned fourth-place kudos in the high jump (6-5.50).

Freshman Adam Brown (McMillan/Newberry) took fifth place in the pole vault (14-5.25) and sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) finished sixth in the 55 meters (6.73). Ferris also was fourth in the distance medley relay (10:31.22) and seventh in the 4x400-meter relay (3:32.68).

Meet participants for the 2005 NCAA-II National Indoor Championships slated to be held Friday and Saturday, March 11-12, will be announced this Tuesday (March 1). The national meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Mass.

Ferris Competes In Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open

The Ferris State University men's indoor track and field team took part in the Central Michigan Jack Skoog Open held Friday (Feb. 18) at Mt. Pleasant, Mich.

The Bulldog men's team totaled 12 top-six finishes in the non-scoring meet and was led by sophomore Kyle Schuberg's (Big Rapids) first-place effort in the 200 meters (22.47). He also was third in the long jump (21-4.75) and fifth in the 60 meters (7.13).

Sophomore J.L. Ball (Mt. Pleasant) was second overall in the 600 meters (1:30.98), freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) placed third in the 800 meters (1:55.28) and freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) received fourth-place kudos in the high jump (6-4).

Junior Sean Maxwell (Sturgis/Mendon) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.93), sophomore Steve Haley (Fraser) was sixth in the 200 meters (23.87) and sophomore Darryl Glashauser (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.02).

Junior Tom Swartwood (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) took sixth place in both the shot put (46-8.25) and the weight throw (49-5.75). The Bulldog men also were third overall in the 4x400-meter relay (3:37.0).

Ferris State will compete in the GLIAC Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26, in University Center, Mich. The meet will be hosted by Saginaw Valley State University.

Ferris Turns In Solid Performances At Eastern Michigan Open

The Ferris State University men's indoor track and field team turned in some solid performances in the Eastern Michigan Open held Saturday (Feb. 12) at EMU's Bob Parks Track in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Bulldog men's team tallied 12 top-eight finishes in the non-scoring meet, which included schools from all levels.

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) paced the men's team by winning the long jump (21-4) and finishing fifth in the 60 meters (7.20) along with seventh in the 200 meters (22.57).

Freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) was fourth in the mile run (4:17.90) while freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) finished fourth in both the high jump (6-6) and long jump (20-4.25).

In the men's pole vault, freshman Adam Brown (McMillan/Newberry) placed fifth (15-0), senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) took sixth place (14-6) and junior Brent Harkness (Jamestown, N.Y.) finished seventh (14-6).

Junior Sean Maxwell (Sturgis/Mendon) registered a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.89), sophomore Darryl Glashauser (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) captured seventh place in the 60-meter hurdles (8.90) and FSU took fourth place in the men's 4x400-meter relay (3:37.62).

Ferris State will compete in the Jack Skoog Open hosted by Central Michigan University Friday, Feb. 18, in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The meet begins at 5 p.m. (EST).

FSU Places Sixth Overall At Division II Team Challenge

The Ferris State University men's indoor track and field team registered a sixth-place finish in the annual Division II Team Challenge meet hosted by the University of Findlay on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Findlay, Ohio. The event was sponsored by the United States Track Coaches Association.

In the men's competition, Ferris State totaled 45.50 points in the field of 16 teams. Saginaw Valley State took first place (107.50) while Findlay was second (103) and Tiffin (Ohio) finished third (64).

Freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) won the mile run (4:17.27) for FSU while senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) was the runner-up in the pole vault (14-6.25).

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) posted the school's third-best indoor 200-meter run performance (22.76) by finishing third overall. Freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) took fourth place in the high jump (6-5), freshman Adam Brown (McMillan/Newberry) tied for fourth place in the pole vault (13-6.50) and junior Bryan Dyer (Waterford/Kettering) captured fourth place in the weight throw (50-8.75).

Sophomore Chad Hanson (Dearborn/Edsel Ford) and junior Tom Swartwood (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) both tied for sixth place in the weight throw (48-4.75) and FSU was seventh in the men's distance medley relay (10:30.17).

Ferris State will take part in the Eastern Michigan Open Saturday, Feb. 12, in Ypsilanti, Mich. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m. (EST).

Ferris Takes Part In GVSU Laker Challenge

The Ferris State University men’s indoor track and field team took part in the Mike Lints Laker Challenge hosted by Grand Valley State Friday (Jan. 21) in Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldog men’s team had 12 top-four place winners and won three individual events. Freshman Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) won the mile run (4:21.86), freshman Joe Mielke (Westland/Franklin) took top honors in the high jump (6-6) and senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) claimed the pole vault (14-6). Junior Brent Harkness (Jamestown, N.Y.) tied for runner-up accolades in the vault (14-6).

Freshman Ray Rollet (South Rockwood/Airport) placed third in the mile run (4:30.60), junior Corey Peyerk (Marysville) was third in the 400 meters (52.72) and junior Bryan Dyer (Waterford/Kettering) finished third in the shot put (44-11.50). FSU also registered a third-place performance in the 4x400-meter relay (3:33.10).

Junior Sean Maxwell (Sturgis/Mendon) took fourth place in the 55-meter hurdles (8.32), junior Tom Swartwood (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) captured fourth place in the shot put (44-4.25) and Mielke tied for fourth place in the long jump (20-11.25). Dyer also placed fourth in the weight throw (47-5.75).

Mielke’s high jump performance along with sophomore Kyle Schuberg’s (Big Rapids) fifth-place effort in the 200 meters (23.12) both ranked among the school’s top-five all-time showings.

Ferris State will take part in the annual Division II Team Challenge Saturday, Feb. 5, at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio. The meet begins at 11 a.m. (EST).

Bulldogs Open Season At SVSU Cardinal Collegiate Indoor Open

The Ferris State University men's indoor track and field team opened the 2004-05 campaign by taking part in the 11th annual Saginaw Valley State Cardinal Collegiate Indoor Open Friday (Jan. 14) in University Center, Mich.

The Bulldog men's squad posted 13 efforts among the top five place winners.

In the men's competition, junior Brent Harkness (Jamestown, N.Y.) won the pole vault (14-6) while senior Ryan Rouse (Macomb/Richmond) was second overall (14-0) in the same event. Ferris also was second in the men's distance medley relay (11:07.72).

The Bulldogs received third place efforts from junior Tom Swartwood (Morley/Morley-Stanwood) in the shot put (45-7.50), junior Bryan Dyer (Waterford/Kettering) in the weight throw (50-5.50) and junior Seam Maxwell (Sturgis/Mendon) in the 60-meter hurdles (8.84).

Freshman Adam Brown (McMillan/Newberry) took fourth place in the pole vault (13-0), sophomore Darryl Glashauser (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) was fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.10) and sophomore Justin Barts (Richland/Gull Lake) placed fifth in the mile run (4:32.80). Swartwood added a fifth place finish in the weight throw (46-6.50) while the Bulldogs placed fifth in the 4x400-meter relay (3:39.53).

Sophomore Kyle Schuberg (Big Rapids) recorded Ferris' fifth-best all-time indoor performance in the 200 meters by finishing fifth (23.16). He also was fourth in the long jump (20-11).

Ferris State will take part in the Grand Valley State Mike Lints Laker Challenge Friday, Jan. 21, beginning at 5 p.m. (EST) in Allendale, Mich.
