USTFCCCA Logo The Ferris State University men’s cross country squad, under the direction of 11th-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas, recently earned 2006 NCAA Division II All-Academic Team honors as chosen and announced by the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The selection of the all-academic teams was based on cumulative grade point averages submitted by member head coaches for the fall 2006 academic term. All teams with runners from their respective regional meets compiling a cumulative 3.00 grade point average (gpa) or higher were honored for their performance. Those individuals finishing in the top 30 percent of all competitors at the regional meet and who posted a 3.25 gpa or better were also recognized.

The Bulldog men's squad was one of 57 teams selected from the NCAA Division II level with a 3.05 gpa. Nine Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member men's institutions made the list. The FSU men have presently earned all-academic team laurels seven consecutive seasons to date.

Individually, women's sophomore runner Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel Catholic) claimed individual All-Academic Team accolades for Ferris State. The annual women's list included 170 different runners earning the honor.

The Bulldog women's cross country team placed tied for ninth while the men were 20th at the 2006 NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championships (11/4) held in Kenosha, Wis. FSU's women took sixth place and the men finished eighth in the 2006 GLIAC Championships (10/21), which were held at Findlay, Ohio.

Stuart led the Bulldog women with a 12th-place individual performance (22:27.9) on the 5K league championship course as she earned all-conference second team recognition. She also paced FSU at the regional meet with a 27th-place individual performance (23:04.8) in the 6K event.
