NCAA-II GREAT LAKES REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
Grand Valley State Captures Men's & Women's Overall Team Titles
The Grand Valley State University men's and women's cross country teams both captured the overall team titles in the 2005 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships held Saturday (Nov. 5) at Ferris State University's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
The event, which was hosted by Ferris State, drew nearly 300 competitors and included 20 men's programs in addition to 22 women's teams.
GVSU's Mandi Zemba claimed the women's overall regional title as she placed first in the 150-runner field in a time of 20:47.0 on the 6K course. Heather Cooksey of Southern Indiana placed second (21:22.8), Northern Michigan's Stephanie Howe took third place (21:32.9), Jenny Irwin of Ferris State finished fourth (21:45.1) and Karlie Singleton of GVSU was fifth (21:51.0).
The Lakers totaled 29 points to win the women's crown with Wisconsin-Parkside second (110), Southern Indiana third (113) and Northern Michigan fourth (123).
In the men's race, Grand Valley State's Nate Peck was the individual champion. He completed the 10K course in a time of 31:28.1 to outdistance second-place finisher Brian Taghon of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (31:40.0). Southern Indiana's Ray Alvarez picked up third place honors (31:42.5), Justin Kessler of Wayne State was fourth (31:46.0) and WSU's Matt Fecht placed fifth (31:50.3) among the 141 men's finishers.
Grand Valley State netted 43 points in earning the men's overall title. Wayne State placed second overall (54), Southern Indiana took third place (60) and Saginaw Valley State finished fourth (105).
The top four teams in both the men's and women's divisions plus the top two individuals not associated with one of the qualifying teams earned bids to the NCAA Division II Championships slated to be held Saturday, Nov. 19, in Pomona, Calif. Host Ferris State's women's team finished one spot short of qualifying as a team as the Bulldogs placed fifth for the second consecutive year.
Individual qualifiers included Irwin and Bellarmine's (Ky.) Meghan Crowe (22:13.4) in the women's division along with Taghon and Lewis' (Ill.) Andy Tremble (31:57.1) in the men's field.
All-Region awards were presented to the top 15 finishers in both the men's and women's races.
