Feb. 26: FSU Receives All-Academic Team Recognition

The Ferris State University men’s cross country squad has earned 2001 NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team honors as announced by the coaches’ association.

The selection of the all-academic teams were based on cumulative grade-point averages submitted by member head coaches for the 2001 fall academic term. All teams above a cumulative 3.00 grade point average (GPA) and individuals with a 3.25 GPA or higher were honored for their performance.

Ferris State was 24th overall of 37 men’s teams selected with a 3.130 GPA. Fort Hays State (Kan.) University garnered top academic team laurels by posting a 3.590 GPA. Mercyhurst placed 15th overall (3.265 GPA), Northwood University finished 16th (3.260 GPA) and Ashland was 20th (3.170 GPA) as four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member schools ranked in the nation’s top 25.

Senior Steve Picucci also earned individual academic recognition. He compiled a 3.660 GPA during the fall term.

The Bulldog men’s cross country team placed sixth overall at the 2001 GLIAC Cross Country Championships under sixth-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas.


Nov. 5: Bulldogs Take Eighth at Regionals

The Ferris State University men's cross country team concluded the 2001 campaign with an eighth place overall finish at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships held on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis. FSU tallied 228 team points in the 20-team race.

Freshman Joe Swendrowski led the Bulldogs as he clocked 33:32 on the 10K course to finish 21st overall. Senior Steve Picucci placed 37th in the 132-competitor field in a time of 33:59.

Sophomore Joe Every finished 41st overall in a time of 34:06 while senior Josh Wittenbach was 57th overall at 34:39. Senior Ken Zimmerman placed 72nd in the field in a time of 35:05. Two other Bulldog runners competed but did not figure in the team score. Junior Pat Wehrman was 74th at 35:09 while senior Jared Kramer placed 108th overall in a time of 36:23.

Oct. 24: Rockford Freshman Earns Conference Honors

Ferris State University freshman Joe Swendrowski of Rockford (Mich.) earned second-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honors for his performance at the 2001 GLIAC Men's Cross Country Championships held this past Saturday (Oct. 20) at Ashland, Ohio.

Swendrowski completed the 8K course in a time of 26:12 to place ninth overall in the 116-runner field. His performance lifted Ferris State to a sixth-place team finish in the 12-team men's division as FSU tallied 141 points.

The top seven places in the men's field earned first-team All-GLIAC honors. Swendrowski was one of seven athletes to earn second-team recognition as he registered his fourth top 10 finish in six meets this season.

The Bulldog men will compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships on Nov. 3 at 10:30 a.m. in Kenosha, Wis.


Oct. 20: FSU Takes Sixth at GLIAC Championships

The Ferris State University men's cross country team tallied 141 points as they finished sixth overall at the 2001 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Saturday (Oct. 20) at Ashland, Ohio.

Freshman Joe Swendrowski led the Bulldogs as he completed the 8K course in a time of 26:12 to place ninth overall. Senior Steve Picucci was 27th among the 116 runners competing as he clocked 27:01.

Sophomore Joe Every was 29th overall at 27:05, senior Ken Zimmerman was 36th at 27:20 and junior Pat Wehrman finished 43rd in a time of 27:30 as all five Bulldog runners who scored placed in the top 50.

Senior Josh Wittenbach placed 61st overall at 27:58 and Jared Kramer was 83rd with a time of 28:36. Freshman Ben Baldwin clocked 29:37 to place 99th in the field while Pat Kerwin finished 107th at 31:02.

The Bulldogs will compete in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships on Nov. 3 at 10:30 a.m. in Kenosha, Wis.

Oct. 6: Bulldog Men Defeat Northwood at Ferris State Open

The Ferris State University men's cross country team tallied 24 total points to defeat Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Northwood by seven points in the Ferris State Open on Saturday at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Senior Josh Wittenbach clocked a time of 27:17 in the 8K race to finish second overall in the 15-competitor field. Senior Ken Zimmerman placed third overall at 27:21 while junior Pat Wehrman finished fifth in a time of 27:38.

Freshman Joe Swendrowski placed sixth in a time of 27:40, sophomore Joe Every was eighth at 27:46 and senior Jared Kramer finished 11th overall at 28:23. Freshman Ben Baldwin clocked 29:21 in finishing 12th while sophomore Pat Kerwin placed 14th at 31:14.

The Bulldogs will take part in the GLIAC Championships on Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. in Ashland, Ohio.

Sept. 29: Bulldog Men Place 14th Overall at Lakefront Invitational

The Ferris State University men's cross country team finished 14th overall in the 38-team Loyola Lakefront Invitational held at Montrose Harbor Beach on Saturday in Chicago, Ill. In the non-NCAA Division I race, the Bulldogs tallied 219 points to finish seventh among 27 teams competing. FSU scored 405 points in the overall team standings.

Freshman Joe Swendrowski led Ferris State as he completed the 8K race in a time of 25:53 to finish 30th overall in the 378-competitor field. His average time per mile was 5:13. Against the non-Division I schools, his finish placed 15th overall.

Senior Steve Picucci was 80th overall in the field with a time of 26:47. He finished 39th overall in the Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college field.

Senior Josh Wittenbach clocked 26:48 to finish two spots behind Picucci in 82nd place. He averaged 5:24 per mile. Junior Pat Wehrman placed 124th overall at 27:17 while sophomore Joe Every finished 133rd at 27:23.

Two other Bulldog runners also competed but did not figure in the team score. Jared Kramer was 217th at 28:37 while freshman Ben Baldwin was 281st in the field with a time of 29:38.

FSU will host the Ferris State Open on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 9:30 a.m. at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.

Sept. 14: FSU Men Finish Second In Bulldog Invitational

The Ferris State University men's cross country team tallied 41 points to finish second overall at the 8K Bulldog Invitational held on Friday (Sept. 14) at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.

Aquinas won the six-team meet with 21 points. Saginaw Valley State finished third with 75 points, Alma and Spring Arbor tied for fourth with 132 points and Mott Community College was sixth with 152 total points.

Freshman Joe Swendrowski placed second overall in a time of 26:14 to lead Ferris State. Dan Kasprowicz of Aquinas won the 80-runner race as he clocked 26:00.

Two other Bulldog runners finished among the top 10 competitors. Senior Josh Wittenbach was sixth overall in a time of 26:43 while senior Steve Picucci placed seventh at 26:45. Sophomore Joe Every averaged 5:25 per mile to finish 15th overall in a time of 26:57. Junior Pat Wehrman was 20th at 27:04 while senior Ken Zimmerman placed 27th in a time of 27:32. Jared Kramer finished 45th at 28:31. Two other Bulldog runners also competed. Freshman Ben Baldwin clocked 29:27 to finish 60th overall while Pat Kerwin placed 75th at 31:23.

Ferris State will take part in the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. in Chicago, Ill.

Sept. 7: Bulldogs Finish Third at Aquinas Invitational

The Ferris State University men's cross country team placed third overall at the Aquinas College Invitational on Friday (Sept. 7) at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs tallied 81 points in the four-team, 8,000-meter race.

Grand Valley State won the meet with 23 points as the Lakers had seven individuals place in the top 10. Aquinas finished second with 41 points while Lansing Community College totaled 109 points in finishing fourth overall.

Freshman Joe Swendroski led the Bulldogs as he placed 13th overall in a time of 27:52. Senior Josh Wittenbach finished second for FSU as he clocked 28:21 to finish in 18th place.

Two other Bulldog runners finished among the top 30 competitors. Senior Steve Picucci was 21st overall in a time of 28:28 while junior Pat Wehrman placed 27th at 28:46.

Sophomore Joe Every finished 38th in a time of 29:32, senior Ken Zimmerman was 39th at 29:38 and freshman Ben Baldwin clocked 30:56 to place 49th overall.

Ferris State will host the Bulldog Invitational on Friday (Sept. 14) at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids. The meet is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.

Aug. 31: FSU Men Finish Second at Drenth Invitational

The Ferris State University men's cross country squad finished second overall in its season-opening meet on Friday (Aug. 31) at the Jeff Drenth Invitational at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Mich. FSU totaled 50 points as the Chippewas won the two-team meet with 15 total points.

Freshman Joe Swendroski led the Bulldogs as he completed the four-mile course at University Park in a time of 21:03 to finish ninth overall. Senior Steve Picucci placed 10th for Ferris State as he clocked 21:36.

Three other Bulldog runners finished among the top 15 competitors. Junior Pat Wehrman was 12th overall in a time of 21:53, senior Josh Wittenbach finished 13th at 21:58 and sophomore Joe Every placed 14th overall with a time of 22:04. Senior Ken Zimmerman finished 17th in the race at 22:58 and freshman Ben Baldwin was 18th in his first collegiate race with a time of 23:34.

Ferris State will compete in the Aquinas Invitational on Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich.
