Local Product Picks Up First League Weekly Award This Season

Jared Kelsh Junior runner Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) of the Ferris State University men's cross country squad is this season's first recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Runner of the Week Award, which was announced by the league office on Thursday (Sept. 6).

Kelsh led the Bulldogs as they officially opened the 2007 campaign by taking part in the 22nd annual Central Michigan Jeff Drenth Invitational held last Friday (Aug. 31) at University Park in Mount Pleasant, Mich. He earned runner-up honors in the field of 45 runners by clocking 15:18 on the 5K course. Kelsh finished only two seconds behind Michigan State's Max Goldak (15:16) in the non-scoring field.

The meet field included Ferris State, Central Michigan and Michigan State.

Last season (2006), Kelsh received the cross country program's Most Valuable Runner Award honor after finishing as the Bulldogs' highest place winner in four of the six meets he competed. Kelsh turned in a ninth-place effort (26:49) in last year's 8K Bulldog Invitational hosted by Ferris State at Katke Golf Course. He was 38th overall (26:08.4) in the 8K race at the 2006 GLIAC Championships in Findlay, Ohio.

In 2005-06, Kelsh earned Most Valuable Athlete Award laurels for the men's track middle and long distance events. He received the FSU track squad's Most Outstanding Performer Award for the distance area in 2004-05.

Kelsh also claimed All-GLIAC kudos with a runner-up finish in the mile run (4:15.03) at last season's (2006-07) GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships (Feb. 23-24) in University Center, Mich. He then took third place in both the 800 meters (1:54.18) and the 1,500 meters (3:52.79) at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships (May 4) in Midland, Mich. He surpassed national provisional qualifying standards in both the indoor and outdoor campaigns last year.

The Bulldogs will next take part in the Northwood Open Friday, Sept. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. (EDT) in Midland, Mich.
