FERRIS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RANKED REGIONALLY THIS WEEK
Bulldog Men's & Women's Squads Both Among Region's Top 10 Teams
Both the Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams are ranked among the Great Lakes Region's top 10 teams this week as announced by the release of the weekly U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II Rankings.
The Bulldog women's squad climbed to fifth overall in this week's regional rankings after previously being ranked 10th in each of the initial four polls this campaign. In addition, the men's team entered the regional listing for the first time this season in the number nine position.
Grand Valley State heads the women's regional poll followed by Wisconsin-Parkside, Findlay and Wayne State in the top four spots. GVSU also tops the men's listing with Southern Indiana, Missouri-Rolla, Northern Kentucky and Ashland rounding out the top five positions.
The USTFCCCA releases a regional and national poll each week throughout the fall season. Presently, Abilene Christian (Texas) is the nation's top-ranked men's program with Adams State (Colo.) on top of the women's poll.
Both Bulldog teams capped off a successful day of action in the 35th annual Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational held last Saturday (Sept. 29) on Montrose Beach in Chicago, Ill. The annual event featured 11 races from the elementary to collegiate divisions. The Bulldog men's squad captured the 25-team Collegiate Maroon Division with 55 points while the women's squad placed third of 21 competing teams with 112 points.
Bulldog junior Jared Kelsh (Chippewa Lake/Chippewa Hills) won the men's individual title as he clocked 25:41 on the 8K course to finish ahead of the other 238 runners in the field. Junior Mikinzie Stuart (Saginaw/Nouvel) led the Bulldog women's program as she placed fifth in a 286-runner field with a time of 18:57 on the 5K women's course.
The FSU women's team previously won its own Bulldog Invitational (Sept. 21) held at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids while the men's team earned runner-up honors in the same event. Ferris State is guided by 12th-year head coach Jeff Kavalunas.
The Bulldogs have elected not to take part in the previously scheduled Michigan Intercollegiate Championships on Friday (Oct. 5). Therefore, FSU's next action is slated for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships Saturday, Oct. 20, starting at 10 a.m. (EDT) in Erie, Pa.
