The 2003-04 Ferris State University men’s ice hockey team will hit the ice this Saturday (Sept. 27) for its annual Crimson and Gold Intrasquad Game.
The contest, which is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. (EDT) opening faceoff at FSU’s Ewigleben (pronounced A-VAH-glave-in) Ice Arena in Big Rapids, will showcase the 2003-04 Bulldog squad in competition. The format for the FSU Crimson and Gold Intrasquad Game will be two 20-minute periods with running time. Upon the game’s conclusion, the Skate With The Bulldogs will be conducted and an autograph session with team members will take place during the time period.
A highlight of the event is a skills competition involving current team members, which will be held in between the contest’s first two periods.
Admission to the intrasquad outing is free although a $2 donation to the little Kevin Courtney Foundation is greatly appreciated. The foundation was established by Kevin and Julie Courtney in honor of their late son and funds raised will go directly to support those kids involved in youth hockey who are financially challenged.
Ferris State, the 2002-03 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Regular-Season Champions, will begin its 2003-04 campaign Saturday, Oct. 4, with a home exhibition game versus the University of Windsor. Start time is slated for 4 p.m. (EDT) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Bulldogs then officially start their 2003-04 season the following weekend, Oct. 10-11, with a home-and-home CCHA series against Western Michigan University. The Friday (Oct. 10) season opener at Western is set for a 7:35 p.m. (EDT) opening faceoff at WMU’s Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. Ferris then hosts the Broncos in its home opener Saturday (Oct. 11) at 7:05 p.m. (EDT). A banner-raising ceremony honoring the Bulldogs’ CCHA Championship title and NCAA Division I National Championship Tournament appearance by the 2002-03 squad will take place at intermission between the first and second periods of the league encounter.
Ferris State recorded its most successful season in the program’s 25-year history as a NCAA-I member with a school-record 31-10-1 overall mark while claiming its first-ever CCHA Championship title with a first-place 22-5-1 league record. The nationally-ranked Bulldogs also made their initial NCAA-I Championship Tournament appearance and advanced to the championship game of the NCAA West Regional before being eliminated by eventual 2002-03 National Champion the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
FSU also earned the distinction of being the nation’s first team to attain the 30-win season plateau in 2002-03 and also competed in the CCHA Super Six Championship Tourney for the first time since 1993.
