Long-Time Bulldog Men’s Ice Hockey Assistant Coach Earns Promotion
Drew Famulak, who’s set to embark on his 11th year in the 2003-04 season as the top assistant coach for the Ferris State University men’s ice hockey program, has been promoted to associate head coach in an announcement made today by 12th-year FSU head coach Bob Daniels.
“Drew has done an outstanding job since his arrival,” said Daniels. “This is a way of recognizing his numerous contributions and loyalty to the Bulldog hockey program over an extended period of time.”
“Drew played a big part in our success last season and is deserving of this promotion,” Daniels added.
Famulak arrived at Ferris State prior to the 1993-94 season and presently owns the distinction of having the longest tenure of any assistant coach in the program’s history. | Drew Famulak, who will begin his 11th year at Ferris State this season, was promoted to associate head coach. Through his coaching and recruiting, Famulak played an integral role in the 2002-03 campaign in helping nationally-ranked Ferris post its best season ever in school history with a 31-10-1 overall while claiming its first ever Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Regular-Season Championship title with a first-place 22-5-1 league mark. The Bulldogs also made their initial NCAA Division I Championship Tournament appearance and were NCAA-I West Regional finalists.
Along with his coaching duties, Famulak serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Bulldogs hockey program and through his efforts, Ferris State has landed some of the program’s top recruiting classes in the last seven years, including Hobey Baker Memorial Award Hat Trick Finalist and first-team All-American Chris Kunitz.
Prior to Ferris State, Famulak was the head coach and general manager for the Yorkton (Saskatchewan) Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). While at Yorkton, he coached the Terriers to a second-place finish while five of his players earned NCAA-I scholarships.
His previous coaching experience in the CCHA includes a two-year stint (1990-92) at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he helped recruit the freshmen class for the RedHawks’ 1993 CCHA Championship team. While at MU, Famulak was the bench coach for defensemen and served as the program’s academic advisor.
As a collegiate, Famulak played right wing for the Lake Superior State University’s 1987-88 NCAA-I National Championship Team and for a pair of NCAA Division III national champions at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He lettered for two seasons (1986-88) at LSSU before completing his college playing career at UWSP (1988-90). Famulak played his junior hockey for the SJHL’s Melville (Saskatchewan) Millionaires and totaled 69 points with 31 goals and 38 assists during the 1984-85 season.
Famulak received his bachelor’s degree in business administration-management in 1990 from Wisconsin-Stevens Point and also has a master’s degree in sports organization from Miami (Ohio) in 1993.
A member of the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA), Famulak resides in Comstock Park with his wife, Cheryl, and their two children.
