FSU GOALTENDER HONORED AS USCHO DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ferris State University men's ice hockey junior goaltender Mike Brown (Calgary, Alberta), who was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week, has also been awarded the same honor by U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) this week in an announement made Tuesday (Dec. 30) by USCHO.
The honor marks the the second time in Brown's career that the FSU netminder has been named the recipient as he notched a pair of shutouts in a home league series sweep of Nebraska-Omaha last season (Feb. 28-March 1) to claim the national honor. Junior goaltender Adam Coole of St. Cloud State was this week's runner-up for the USCHO Defensive Player of the Week kudos while Harvard's junior center Tom Cavanaugh was chosen the Offensive Player of the Week.
Brown was among five individuals who garnered runner-up recognition for the Inside College Hockey.com's (INCH) Player of the Week, which was presented to junior forward Jason Guerriero of Northeastern.
Brown received the weekly honor by the online collegiate hockey service for his outstanding performance last weekend (Dec. 27-28) at the 15th annual Badger Hockey Showdown held at the University of Wisconsin's Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. The Ferris netminder helped lead his team to the tournament title as the Bulldogs recorded a 7-4 win over Massachusetts-Lowell in last Saturday's (Dec. 27) tourney opener and then snapped nationally-ranked Wisconsin's national-leading 15-game unbeaten string with a 3-1 win over the Badgers in the championship contest Sunday (Dec. 28). As a result Brown was honored as the Badger Hockey Showdown's The Most Outstanding Player. He registered a .935 save percentage by turning away 72-of-77 shots on goal in the tourney, which included making 38 saves in the championship game.
This season in 18 contests, Brown has posted an 8-8-2 record with a 3.00 goals against average and a .896 save percentage. Brown, the Bulldogs' all-time winningest netminder, has accumulated a 48-31-3 career mark with a 2.58 goals against average and a .915 save percentage in 84 games to date.
Both a 2002-03 American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) First-Team All-America and CCHA First-Team selection a season ago, Brown was recognized as the CCHA's Defensive Player of the Week a league-record six times (Oct. 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4, 25 & March 3) last season.
The Bulldogs, who are midst a present seven-game unbeaten streak at 5-0-2, are 8-8-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the CCHA.
Ferris State hosts the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks this weekend (Jan. 2-3) in a CCHA series at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. This Friday's contest will start at 7:35 p.m. (EST) with Saturday's outing scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. (EST) opening faceoff.
