Ferris State University senior right wing Derrick McIver (Thunder Bay, Ontario) has been named to the CCHA All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season and is among 10 student-athletes chosen to the 2003-04 squad as announced Tuesday (March 9) by the league office.

McIver was a repeat selection as were Miami (Ohio) forward Mike Kompon, forward D'Arcy McConvey of Bowling Green State and Western Michigan forward Paul Davies, who achieved honorable mention recognition last season. Comprising the remainder of the all-academic squad were Miami (Ohio) forward Derek Edwardson, forward Rob Globke of Notre Dame, Ohio State defenseman Nate Guenin, forward Tom Herman of Alaska Fairbanks, forward Dana Lattery of Western Michigan, and Nebraska-Omaha forward Andrew Wong.

Representing Ferris State besides McIver were senior center-left wing Trevor Large (Brampton, Ont.), sophomore right wing Greg Rallo (Gurnee, Ill.) and sophomore right wing Nick Scheible (Big Rapids), who all gained special mention honors. Scheible also attained the same recognition a season ago.

Senior Derrick McIver was a repeat CCHA All-Academic Team selection.

The all-academic team is voted on by the league’s faculty representatives. To be eligible for consideration, a player must have completed at least one academic year, have a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.00 scale and be a letterwinner for the 2002-03 season. The six top vote getters (including ties), regardless of position, are named to the all-academic team with others who receive votes earning honorable mention. All players nominated receive special mention.

McIver, a computer information systems major, attained CCHA All-Academic laurels last season after garnering honorable mention kudos the previous campaign. A two-time (2001-02 and 2002-03) FSU Hockey Scholar-Athlete Award recipient, McIver earned both the FSU President's and Dean's Academic Awards for the second straight year a season ago for registering the team's highest grade point average. The Bulldogs' team captain presently is fifth in team scoring with 20 points on 10 goals and assists apiece in 36 games this campaign.

A business administration major and a FSU Dean's Academic Award honoree, Scheible has four goals and two assists for six points in 24 outings this season while Large, who's majoring in computer information systems, has tallied four points (all goals) in 28 contests. Rallo, a general business major, ranks eighth among the team's top points leaders with 16 total on six goals and 10 assists in 36 games. He was named Ferris' 2002-03 Rookie of the Year.

The selection of McIver to the league's all-academic team gives Ferris a first-team pick for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. The last Bulldog skater to pick up first-team plaudits was defenseman Jim Dube, a two-time (1999-00 and 2000-01) selection. To date, FSU currently has 22 student-athletes earn CCHA All-Academic recognition in the program’s 26-year NCAA Division I history.

The Bulldogs, who have posted a 15-18-3 overall mark and a 10-17-1 CCHA ledger, begin a best-of-three CCHA Tournament First-Round series this weekend (March 12-14) versus the Michigan State Spartans at MSU's Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. The puck drops for this Friday's tourney opener at 7:05 p.m. (EST) while Saturday's rematch will take place at 7:35 p.m. (EST) as a result of being televised live on Fox Sports Net Detroit. This Sunday's contest, if necessary, will start at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
