FERRIS STATE HOCKEY ANNOUNCES 2003-04 SEASON AWARD RECIPIENTS

Senior Brett Smith Garners Three Team Awards, Including Most Valuable Player

Senior center Brett Smith (Guelph, Ontario) was honored as the Ferris State University men’s ice hockey team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2003-04 season Saturday (April 17) evening during the program’s annual awards banquet at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center in Big Rapids, Mich. The postseason event was sponsored by the FSU Blue Line Club.

Smith, who established career season highs in points (33), goals (13) and assists (20) this season in 38 contests, also received both the Lloyd Earl Award as the team’s leading points getter and the Blue Line Competitive Award. He also led the Bulldogs in multi-point games (11) and game-winning goals (three) this campaign. Smith was selected the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s (CCHA) Offensive Player of the Week (Dec. 8) and placed tied for 17th among the final CCHA overall points leaders. The assistant captain concluded his four-year career with 61 points (27-34–61), including four game-winning markers and 14 multi-point games in 153 outings.

The Steve Banonis Most Improved Player Award was presented to junior defenseman Skip Renauld (Regina, Saskatchewan) and sophomore right wing Nick Scheible (Big Rapids). Renauld matched his career-best four-point season total with one goal and three assists along with a plus three efficiency rating in 34 games. He garnered four points (all assists) in 12 encounters for the 2002-03 campaign. Scheible, a two-time (2002-03 and 2003-04) CCHA All-Academic Special Mention honoree, totaled a career-high six points on four goals and two assists in 25 appearances. The Bulldog forward recorded a goal and three assists for four points in 16 contests the previous season.

Freshman left wing Mark Bomersback (Rochester, Alberta) was tabbed the Rookie of the Year Award recipient after leading all FSU freshmen skaters in scoring with 18 points on eight goals and 10 assists in 37 outings. His four multi-point games ranked tied for the sixth highest output among the squad’s leaders while his two multi-assist outing tied for the fourth best on the team. Freshman right wing Zac Pearson’s (White Lake) team-leading +9 efficiency rating afforded him the winner of the Plus/Minus Award. Pearson netted nine points (2-7–9) in 31 contests this season, which tied for the second-best point total among first-year Bulldog players.

Picking up the Scholar-Athlete Award for excellence in the classroom and on the ice once again was senior right wing Derrick McIver (Thunder Bay, Ontario), who became a three-time (2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04) recipient of the award. McIver repeated as a CCHA All-Academic Team selection this season after attaining league all-academic honorable mention plaudits in the 2001-02 campaign. The team captain finished sixth in team scoring this campaign with 10 goals and assists apiece for 20 points in 38 games. McIver closed out his career with 69 points on 31 goals and 38 assists to go along with a +13 plus/minus efficiency rating in 144 contests. He also earned for the third consecutive year the FSU President’s and Dean’s Academic Awards as a result of boasting the team’s highest grade point average.

Neal and Paulette Wood and Ron and Patty Patterson were bestowed with the FSU Blue Line Club Recognition Award for their numerous and continuous contributions to the Bulldog hockey program.

Ferris State finished the 2003-04 season at 15-20-3 overall and 10-17-1 (10th place) in the CCHA under 12th-year head coach Bob Daniels.

FSU also honored its five seniors on this season’s squad – right wing-center Trevor Large (Brampton, Ontario), defenseman Simon Mangos (Caledon, Ontario), Derrick McIver, Brett Smith, and goaltender Matt Swanson (Clinton Township).
