Scherlinck Named To Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Honorable Mention Team

Freshman defenseman Jeremy Scherlinck (Grosse Pointe), a member of the 2002-03 Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Regular-Season Champion Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, has been named to seven-member Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Honorable Mention Team as announced by the league office Monday (March 10).
Scherlinck joined five other defensemen on the honorable mention squad, which includes Matt Davis of Miami (Ohio), Ohio State's Nate Guenin along with Juha Alen, Jamie Milam and Nathan Oystrick all of Northern Michigan. Ohio State forward Ryan Kesler was the only non-defenseman chosen to the team.

The CCHA All-Rookie Team, which includes seven freshmen for the fourth time due to a tie in balloting at the forward position, featured three skaters from Michigan - forward Jeff Tambellini, defenseman Danny Richmond and goaltender Al Montoya. Comprising the remainder of the group are Western Michigan forward Vince Bellissimo, forward David Booth of Michigan State, Northern Michigan forward Dirk Southern and defenseman Andy Greene of Miami (Ohio).
Members of the Bauer/CCHA All-Rookie Team were selected by the 12 head coaches in the CCHA and coaches weren't allowed to vote for players from their own team. The team will be honored at the 2003 CCHA Awards Banquet on Wednesday, March 19, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, Mich.
Scherlinck presently ranks as Ferris State's fourth highest scoring defenseman with 13 points on one goal and 12 assists to go with a +10 plus/minus rating in 36 contests this season. In 28 league games, Scherlinck has posted nine points with a goal and eight assists while registering a +4 efficiency rating. The 6-4, 190-pound blueliner has recorded three multi-point game efforts this campaign. His lone goal occurred in the Bulldogs' 10-1 home league triumph over Bowling Green State earlier this season (10/18).
Ferris State, which is currently ranked fourth nationally this week, is midst its best season ever in the program's 25-year NCAA Division I history with a school-best 27-8-1 overall record. The Bulldogs captured the CCHA Regular-Season title for the first time in the program's history with a first-place 22-5-1 league mark.
The Bulldogs begin CCHA Tournament play this weekend (March 14-16), hosting Lake Superior State in a first-round, best-of-three series at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. This Friday's contest begins at 7:35 p.m. (EST) while Saturday's encounter is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. (EST) opening faceoff. Sunday's game, if necessary, is also slated to start at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
