Brown and Kunitz Repeat As CCHA Players Of The Week
FSU Netminder Honored For Third Consecutive Week
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second straight week, Ferris State University sophomore goaltender Mike Brown (Calgary, Alberta) and senior left wing Chris Kunitz (Regina, Saskatchewan) have been selected the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive and Offensive Players of the Week in an announcement made by the league office.
Both individuals were recognized for their respective performances in the Bulldogs' league road series sweep of 15th-ranked Notre Dame last weekend (Oct. 25-26).
Brown became just the second player in the history of the CCHA to capture a weekly award for three consecutive weeks, joining Nebraska-Omaha goaltender Dan Ellis, who was honored with three straight Defensive Player-of-the-Week selections last season. In the Notre Dame series, Brown blocked 63-of-66 shots on net for a .955 save percentage while allowing just one even-strength goal. He registered 23 saves in last Friday's 5-2 victory and then posted 40 saves in Saturday's 4-1 win.
Brown, who sports a 5-1-0 record with a 1.67 goals against average and a .951 save percentage in six contests this season, presently has recorded a league-leading 1.25 goals against average in CCHA games only and ranks second overall.
The CCHA's top points leader this season to date, Kunitz scored two goals and assisted on two others each night in the two-game set. The All-America candidate scored Ferris' first two goals in Friday's encounter and then accounted for the last two FSU markers, including a short-hander, in Saturday's affair.
Kunitz has totaled four straight two-goal games to date and has compiled 16 points (8-8--16) in his last four contests. For the season, the assistant captain has a team-high 17 points with nine goals and eight assists to go with a squad-best +12 efficiency rating in six outings.
Ferris State, which is ranked 13th in both the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online polls this week, will try to extend its five-game winning streak this weekend (Nov. 1-2) as the Bulldogs go up against the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks in CCHA play. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 11:05 p.m. (EST) both evenings at UAF's Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
