Derrick McIver
Derrick McIver is the sixth Ferris State student-athlete in the last seven seasons to receive top CCHA All-Academic Team honors.

Comprising the CCHA All-Academic Team were McIver, senior forward David Brisson of Nebraska-Omaha, Western Michigan senior defenseman David Cousineau, senior forward Chris Gobert of Northern Michigan, junior forward Mike Kompon of Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green State junior forward D’Arcy McConvey, and senior defenseman Scott Titus of Ohio State. For the second time since the award’s inception in 1988-89, seven players representing seven different schools have been named to the CCHA All-Academic Team.

The all-academic team is voted on by the league’s faculty representatives. To be eligible for consideration, a player must have completed at least one academic year, have a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.00 scale and be a letterwinner for the 2002-03 season. The six top vote getters (including ties), regardless of position, are named to the all-academic team with others who receive votes earning honorable mention. All players nominated receive special mention.

McIver, a computer information systems major, received CCHA All-Academic Honorable Mention honors last season joining defenseman Kristian Schroder. The 6-1, 195-pound winger also garnered FSU’s Scholar-Athlete Award and was a co-recipient of the team’s Blueline Competitive Award a season ago. McIver was also recognized as the recipient of both the FSU President’s and Dean’s Academic Awards for having the team’s highest grade point average. This season, the Ferris assistant captain has totaled 16 points with seven goals and nine assists and a +8 plus/minus efficiency rating in 36 contests.

A business administration major, Scheible has appeared in 15 games this season. He has notched a goal with two assists for three points in his initial collegiate campaign.

McIver’s selection to the league all-academic team gave the Bulldogs first-team honorees for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. The last Ferris student-athlete to garner first-team laurels was defenseman Jim Dube, a two-time (1999-00 and 2000-01) selection. To date, FSU currently has 18 student-athletes earn CCHA All-Academic recognition in the program’s 25-year NCAA Division I history.

Ferris State, which is currently ranked fourth nationally this week, is midst its best season ever with a school-best 27-8-1 overall record. The Bulldogs also claimed the CCHA Regular-Season Championship title also for the first time in school history with a first-place 22-5-1 league mark.

The Bulldogs begin CCHA Tournament play this weekend (March 14-16), hosting Lake Superior State in a first-round, best-of-three series at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. This Friday's contest begins at 7:35 p.m. (EST) while Saturday's encounter is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. (EST) opening faceoff. Sunday's game, if necessary, is also slated to start at 7:05 p.m. (EST).
