Mike Brown Claims Fifth CCHA Weekly Player Honor

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Ferris State University men's ice hockey sophomore goaltender Mike Brown (Calgary, Alberta) captured his fifth Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honor of the 2002-03 season for his performance last weekend (Nov. 22-23) in the Bulldogs' home league sweep of the nationally-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. The announcement was made by the league office in Farmington Hills, Mich.

In the two-game series against OSU, Brown turned away 56-of-59 shots on goal for a .949 save percentage and posted a 1.49 goals against average as Ferris recorded its fourth league series sweep this season. He made 31 saves in Friday's 4-2 victory and totaled 25 stops in Saturday's 2-1 overtime triumph over the Buckeyes.

This season, Brown became the first individual in CCHA history to receive a weekly award four consecutive weeks as a result of being selected the league's Defensive Player of the Week and was recently featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces In The Crowd section for his noteworthy accomplishment.

Brown presently sports an 11-3-0 record with a 1.86 goals against average and a .941 save percentage in 14 contests this season as the nationally-ranked Bulldogs are off to their second-best start in the program's 25-year NCAA Division I history with an 11-3-0 overall record, which includes a first-place 9-1-0 CCHA mark.

For his career, Brown has compiled a 21-16-0 mark to go with a 2.36 goals against average and a .923 save percentage in 39 appearances to date. He's also presently one victory shy of tying Marc Felicio (1987-01) and Glenn Raeburn (1985-87) for 10th place among Ferris' all-time winningest goaltenders.

Ferris State is idle this weekend (Nov. 29-30) before returning to the ice the following weekend (Dec. 6-7) with a CCHA home-and-home series against the Michigan State Spartans. Opening faceoff for Friday's (Dec. 6) contest is 7:35 p.m. (EST) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs then travel to East Lansing, Mich., Saturday (Dec. 7) for a 7:05 p.m. (EST) encounter versus the Spartans at MSU's Munn Ice Arena.
