Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Thursday (March 21) signed center Rob Collins to an amateur tryout.
Collins, 24, recently completed a stellar four-year collegiate career at Ferris State University. He tallied 15 goals, 33 assists and 48 points in 36 games as a senior, becoming the first player in school history to lead the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in scoring.
A 2001-02 First-Team All-CCHA performer, Collins paced the circuit with four shorthanded goals (tied), 28 assists and 40 points in 28 conference games, and his overall assists per game average (0.92) placed third nationally.
Last Thursday (March 14), the Kitchener, Ontario, native was named one of 10 finalists for the 2002 Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top college hockey player in the United States. The winner, chosen by a selection committee and fan vote (www.voteforhobey.com), will be announced on Friday, April 5, during the NCAA Frozen Four championship tournament.
The nephew of Hockey Hall of Famer Bob Gainey, Collins joins defenseman John Gruden as current Griffins with Bulldog blood. He earned several honors during his distinguished career at FSU, including Rookie of the Year (1999) and the team's Plus/Minus Award (2001).
Collins will be available for the Griffins tomorrow night (Friday, March 22) when they visit the Milwaukee Admirals at 8:30 p.m.
