JIM DUBE NAMED FIRST-TEAM VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN
FSU Student-Athlete Becomes The Second Three-Time Academic All-American In The School's History
Senior defenseman Jim Dube (Ottawa, Ontario) of the Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been named to the 2000-01 Verizon Academic All-America University Division Men's Fall/Winter Sports At-Large First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in an announcement made today (April 17).
With the first-team recognition, Dube joins former Ferris State baseball standout John Gottschalk (1976-78) as the school's only three-time Academic All-American after receiving 1999-00 GTE Academic All-America Second-Team honors and third-team accolades for the 1998-99 athletics season. Dube is the fifth FSU student-athlete to attain first-team Academic All-America laurels, joining Gottschalk (1976-78), Dan Ebright (track/cross country - 1986), Monty Brown (football - 1992) and Craig Lisko (ice hockey - 1994).
The FSU captain was one of nine ice hockey student-athletes selected to the three national at-large teams and joined North Dakota goaltender Karl Goehring, the 2000-01 Verizon Academic All-American of the Year, to attain first-team honors. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) of which Ferris is a member, was also represented by Michigan's Jeff Jillson (second team) and Dan Carlson (third team) of Notre Dame.
The Verizon Academic All-America Fall/Winter At-Large Team consists of student-athletes from the sports of cross country, fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, rifle, skiing, soccer, swimming, water polo and wrestling. The first-team district selections, who were required to be a starter or important reserve while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.20, qualified for the national ballot after a vote by the CoSIDA members in their eight respective districts.
Dube is also the second individual in the Bulldog men's ice hockey program to receive Academic All-America kudos, joining former goaltender Craig Lisko (1990-94). Lisko holds the distinction of being the first NCAA Division I Academic All-American in FSU Athletics history as he was the only Division I men's ice hockey student-athlete to attain first-team laurels for the 1993-94 season.
A business management major, Dube achieved CCHA All-Academic First-Team honors for the second consecutive season during the 2000-01 campaign. Appearing in 36 games this campaign, Dube recorded 16 points on three goals and 13 assists to go along with a plus two efficiency rating as the Bulldogs finished the 2000-01 season at 13-20-5 overall (9-15-4 CCHA mark). His season point total this campaign represented the highest-scoring output among FSU defensemen for the third consecutive season.
Dube, who totaled 20 points apiece in the 1998-99 (7-13-20) and 1999-00 (4-16-20) seasons, attained both 1998-99 All-CCHA Honorable Mention and CCHA All-Academic Honorable Mention recognition during his sophomore season.
A two-time FSU Scholar-Athlete Award co-recipient, Dube concluded his four-year career with 73 career points on 16 goals and 57 assists in 147 contests. He also compiled 15 career multi-point game performances while recording a plus 12 efficiency rating for his career.
