BULLDOG HOCKEY ALUMNUS TURNS IN PRODUCTIVE SEASON
Zach Pearson Recognized As Flint Generals' Rookie of the Year
Former Ferris State University men's ice hockey player Zac Pearson recently completed a productive 2008-09 season as a member of the International Hockey League's (IHL) Flint (Mich.) Generals.
Pearson, who played at Ferris State from 2003-07, totaled 44 points with 18 goals and 26 assists in 56 games this campaign for Flint. The 5-10, 200-pound right wing also registered a league-leading six short-handed goals and one power-play tally while accumulating 42 penalty minutes as the Generals completed their regular season with a 22-47-2-(5) overall record and 51 league points.
As a result of his success on the ice, Pearson was honored as the 2008-09 recipient of the Flint Generals' Rookie of the Year Award. The former Bulldog skater was recognized as the IHL's Player of the Month for April after racking up six goals, nine assists, and a plus 15 efficiency rating. Pearson netted his first professional hat trick in an 11-9 league decision over the Muskegon Lumberjacks while generating a pair of short-handed lamplighters. He was also tabbed the Pepsi IHL Player of the Week (April 5) for the first time this season and was the first Flint player to receive such honor this 2008-09 campaign. Pearson turned in back-to-back five-point game performances during the week and compiled five goals and five helpers apiece in those two contests alone.
Pearson finished seventh among the IHL's top rookie scorers and ranked tied for 36th-place on the league's single-season overall points leaders list.
A native of White Lake, Mich., Pearson concluded his four-year career at Ferris State with 81 points on 24 goals with 57 assists in 147 appearances. He was the 2003-04 team's winner of the Plus/Minus Award and then was a tri-recipient of the program's Steve Banonis Memorial Award as the squad's most improved player for the 2004-05 season. Pearson paced the Bulldogs in scoring as a senior in 2006-07 with 30 points on nine goals and 21 assists in 37 outings.
