FERRIS STATE SELECTED TO FINISH SIXTH IN 2008-09 CCHA POLLS
Expectations Are High For The Bulldogs According To CCHA Prognosticators

The 2008-09 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team has been selected to finish sixth place in both the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Coaches and Media Polls, which were released Tuesday (Sept. 30) during the CCHA's annual Media Day at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Ferris State, under 17th-year head coach Bob Daniels, accumulated 84 points in the coaches poll and garnered 529 points in the balloting by the media. Notre Dame, the 2007-08 national runner-ups, were tabbed the favorite in the coaches poll as the Fighting Irish earned 128 points and had eight first-place votes. Michigan, which claimed both the CCHA Regular-Season and CCHA Tournament Championship titles, was tops in the media poll as a result of the Wolverines receiving 945 points and 43 first-place votes.
The coaches Poll involved the head coaches, excluding their own school, voting on the predicted order of finish with points being awarded on a 12-11-10-9, etc., basis. A record 83 media members ranked the 12 league teams in the media poll based on the same points system as the coaches.
"We're happy to be selected among the upper half of the teams," said Daniels in regards to being picked sixth in both CCHA preseason polls. "However, our goals are much higher. Our goal this season is an overall top-four finish in the league and receive a NCAA Tournament bid.
"We're thrilled to have the high expectations. Our players, the coaching staff and Bulldog hockey fans all are expecting us to have a successful season and I believe it's warranted," added Daniels, the all-time winningest coach in Ferris State's hockey history.
Ferris State returns 19 letterwinners from last season's team which produced an 18-16-5 overall record and finished fifth in the CCHA with a 12-12-4 league mark (28 points). The Bulldogs have 14 of their top 15 scoring leaders from a season ago back in the fold while FSU welcomes back 88.9% (97-109) of their goal-scoring production and 80.6% (224-278) of the squad’s total points output.
Ferris State prepares for the upcoming 2008-09 campaign this Sunday (Oct. 5) as the Bulldogs entertain Windsor (Ontario) in a 2:05 p.m. (EDT) exhibition contest at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The annual "Skate With The Bulldogs" will be held following the contest.
FSU officially begins the 2008-09 season the following weekend, Oct. 10-11, when the Bulldogs host Canisius (N.Y) in a two-game non-league series. The Friday (Oct. 10) season opener is set for a 7:05 p.m. (EDT) opening faceoff while Saturday's (Oct. 11) contest begins at 5:05 p.m. (EDT).

A season ago, Ferris State was chosen to place ninth in the CCHA Coaches Preseason Poll and eighth in the league's media poll. The last time FSU was selected to finish among the CCHA's top six teams was in the 2002-03 poll when the Bulldogs were tabbed second place in the coaches poll and third by the media.
