Pat Maroon Becomes The Flyers' Sixth-Round Draft Pick

Left wing Pat Maroon (St. Louis, Mo.), an incoming freshman on the 2007-08 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team, was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round (161st pick overall) of the 2007 National Hockey League's (NHL) Entry Draft. The annual NHL Draft was held this past weekend (June 22-23) at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

The 6-4, 225-pound Maroon, who inked with the Bulldogs during last November's early-signing period, earned first-team all-league recognition as a member of the St. Louis Bandits of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and was chosen as the NAHL/Sherwood Most Valuable Player for the 2006-07 season. He concluded the 2006-07 season with both a league and team-leading 95 points on 40 goals and 55 assists, which also represented team highs. Maroon also racked up 152 minutes in penalties while totaling 11 power-play goals, five short-handed lamplighters, and five game-winning markers. He paced the NAHL scoring leaders in the 2007 playoffs by recording 23 points on 10 goals with 13 helpers in 12 outings.

Maroon played the 2005-06 season at Texarkana (Ark.) and was named the Bandits' Rookie of the Year after finishing third in team scoring with 60 points on 23 goals and 37 assists in 57 games.

In his two-year (2005-07) juniors career, Maroon accumulated 155 points on 63 goals and 92 assists in 114 contests. The forward finished with 17 power-play goals, five short-handed tallies, and seven game-winning lamplighters.

Entering the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Maroon was listed on the NHL's Central Scouting Service's 'B' prospects list. The NHL Central Scouting rates the 'B' prospects are those players who are potential late-round selections.

Maroon becomes the 27th player in the history of Ferris State men's ice hockey to be drafted by a NHL team and is presently the third Bulldog on the 2007-08 squad to achieve such distinction. Senior goaltender Derek MacIntyre (Stanwood) and junior defenseman Chris Zarb (Detroit) were both 2004 NHL Entry Draft selections. MacIntyre was chosen in the eighth round (234th overall pick) by the San Jose Sharks while Zarb was nabbed by the Philadelphia Flyers with the 144th overall pick in the draft’s fifth round. The Bulldogs had a school-record six individuals apiece taken in the 1987 and 1991 entry drafts.

Ferris State will officially open its 30th season of intercollegiate play at the NCAA Division I level on Oct. 12-13 against the Union Dutchmen in a two-game non-league series at Schnectady, N.Y. The home opener is scheduled for the following weekend, Oct. 19-20, when the Bulldogs entertain the Wayne State Warriors in a two-game non-league set at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
