Kurt Hammerschmidt
Tennis, 1989-90
Hammerschmidt, a two-time All-American, teamed with Aga Soemarno in 1989 to capture the NCAA Division II National Doubles championship -- the first Ferris athletes to win an NCAA title. A two-time GLIAC singles champion in 1989-90, Hammerschmidt was twice an NCAA Division II National Qualifier (1989-90) in both singles and doubles play. As the 1990 Bulldog MVP, he concluded his two-year FSU career with a 44-3 record in singles action and a 38-6 doubles mark.
The Saginaw, Michigan native was a five-time National Amateur Champion in singles and doubles from 1988-90 and won the Virginia State Clay, Hard and Indoor Doubles Championship in 1997. Formerly the associate pro at Congressional Country Club in Potomac, Md., he now operates K&L Sports Academy in Montpelier, Virginia. He established a tennis scholarship at Ferris the first year after his graduation and has visited campus to conduct workshops and to hire FSU interns and grads.
