KATHRYN BOBBIE EARNS ALL-AMERICA SECOND-TEAM HONORS

Bobbie Becomes FSU Women's Golf Program's First Two-Time All-American

Junior Kathryn Bobbie (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Sir James Dunn) of the Ferris State University women’s golf team was recently named to the 2001-02 National Golf Coaches Association’s (NGCA) Division II All-America Second Team at the annual NGCA Awards Banquet (May 16), which was conducted at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich.

Bobbie, who earned 2000-01 NGCA All-America First-Team accolades, was one of six student-athletes selected to the NGCA All-America Second Team and among 18 individuals overall named to one of the three All-America teams.

The National Golf Coaches Association, which began in 1983 as an organization to promote participation in women’s golf, is the premier member-driven association for women’s golf coaches at NCAA Division I, II and III institutions. The 250-plus member NGCA encourages the playing of intercollegiate golf for women in correlation with a general objective of education and in accordance with the highest tradition of intercollegiate competition.

Bobbie finished in a tie for eighth place at the 2002 NCAA Division II Women’s Golf National Championships (May 15-18) in Allendale, Mich., with a four-round 321 score. She earned the distinction of being only the second person in Ferris State women’s golf history to advance on an individual basis joining Amy Summers (1992).

A two-time (2001-02) FSU Most Valuable Player, Bobbie earned first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) accolades for the second consecutive season this spring and repeated as the top medalist at the 2002 GLIAC Championships (4/20-21) with a two-round 156 total (79-77–156) as the Bulldogs won their first-ever conference championship title. She concluded this season with a team-leading 80.7 stroke average (1,372 total strokes in 17 rounds) which represented the fifth best single-season stroke average in the program’s history.

A season ago, Bobbie was chosen the GLIAC Women’s Golfer-of-the-Year and played an integral role in guiding Ferris State to a fifth-place team finish at the 2001 NCAA-II National Championships (5/16-19) in Rock Hill, S.C. She posted a team-high four-round 322-stroke total to place 10th individually. Bobbie notched a school single-season record 79.9 stroke average in 26 rounds with a low round of 73 at the Tri-State Fall Invitational (10/22-23) in Angola, Ind. For her three-year career, Bobbie ranks first among the school’s all-time leaders with an 80.5 stroke average (4,588 total strokes) in 57 career rounds.

The criteria for being chosen a NGCA All-American consists of NCAA qualifying averages (all rounds minus three highest rounds), tournament wins and average place of finish, quality of field in tournaments and a NCAA Medalist (automatic inclusion).
