Ferris State's Raquel Hansen earns academic all-district honors for the second consecutive year.

Senior Raquel Hansen (West Olive/Holland) of the nationally-ranked 2009 Ferris State University women's golf team has been selected to ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District IV College Division Women's At-Large Team for the 2008-09 season. The eight national district teams for both the college and university divisions were released this Thursday (May 21).

Hansen was one of 10 student-athletes to receive first-team All-District IV Team recognition and as a result will now advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. A season ago, the marketing/professional golf management major attained second-team district honors.

This season, Hansen compiled a team second-best 78.66 stroke average (2,281 total strokes) in 29 rounds which ranks 11th place on Ferris State's all-time single-season stroke average leaders. She placed among the top 20 individual golfers in nine tournaments, which included seven within the top 10. Hansen started out the 2008-09 campaign with a season-best second-place 147 two-round score at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational (Aug. 30-31). She would go on to register a sixth-place tying 235-stroke effort at the 2009 NCAA Division II East Regional (May 3-5) before concluding her career with a 32nd-place tying 321 score at the NCAA-II Women's Golf Championship Tournament (May 13-16) in which the Bulldogs tied for sixth-place honors.

Through her efforts on the links, Ferris State was ranked among the nation's top 10 NCAA-II teams during this season and the Bulldogs wrapped up the campaign rated 10th in the final Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Women's Golf Coaches' Poll.

Hansen closes out her four-year (2005-09) career presently ranking fifth among the program's all-time leaders with a 79.89 stroke average (8,549 total strokes) in 107 rounds of play.

A three-time (2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08) National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Scholar-Athlete, Hansen garnered All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team kudos this 2008-09 season after claiming all-conference second-team laurels in each of the previous three seasons (2005-06, 2006-07, and 2007-08). She also has landed a spot on the GLIAC All-Academic Team the last two seasons (2006-07 and 2007-08).

Nominees for the at-large team are comprised of student-athletes who participate in the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo with each NCAA institution allowed to submit three total nominees.

For consideration, student-athletes must have recorded a minimum 3.30 cumulative grade point average on a scale of 4.00, reached sophomore standing both academically and athletically, completed at least one full academic year at their current institutions, and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

The team is selected by a vote of CoSIDA members within District IV, which encompasses those colleges located in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee.

Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
