Jacqueline Benscoter Sets Tourney Record In Her First Collegiate Match
Ferris State University freshman Jacqueline Benscoter (Metamorra/Lapeer West) has been honored as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday (Sept. 5).
Benscoter helped lead the nationally third-ranked Bulldogs to to their fourth consecutive Ferris State Bulldog Invitational championship title last weekend (Sept. 1-2) and then a third-place finish at the Grand Valley State Laker Classic (Sept. 3-4) in Allendale, Mich. The Bulldogs compiled a first-place 616 team score in the 36-hole Ferris State Bulldog Invite and then posted a two-round 621-stroke total in the Grand Valley State Laker Classic.
The 5-4 Benscoter capped off a memorable weekend as she earned top individual medalist honors at the 2007 18-team Ferris State Bulldog Invitational in Big Rapids, Mich., with a tourney-record and even-par 144 score (74-70=144) in a non-scoring capacity. Benscoter's two-round stroke total in her collegiate debut eclipsed the previous tourney mark of 146 set by Yasuyo Kiyota in 2004.
Benscoter then turned in a 10th-place showing at the Grand Valley State Laker Classic (Sept. 3-4) by carding a 154-stroke total (74-80=154) as the Bulldogs captured third place of 17 teams.
Benscoter currently leads Ferris State with a 74.50 stroke average (298 total strokes) in four rounds of play this fall.
Ferris State will compete in its third tournament of the 2007 fall season this weekend (Sept. 8-9) at the Michigan State Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. The tourney will be held at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.
