Hoffman Earns Most Valuable Player Honors For Second Straight Season

Senior Becky Hoffman (Gaines/Swartz Creek) of the Ferris State University women's golf team has been named the Bulldogs' 2007-08 Most Valuable Player while the Bulldog Award recipient is junior Raquel Hansen (West Olive/Grand Haven). The announcement was made by interim head coach Mike Mignano.

Becky Hoffman
Hoffman was a repeat winner of FSU's Most Valuable Player Award after receiving the honor for the 2006-07 campaign while Hansen is a first time recipient of the Bulldog Award, which is presented annually to a member of the FSU women's golf team who displays the most dedication and hard work.

Hoffman, the 2007-08 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Athlete of the Year and a 2007-08 National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America Honorable Mention selection, averaged a team-leading 77.81 strokes per round (2,490 total strokes) in 32 rounds this season. Her stroke average this season represented the third-best ever all-time in FSU women's golf annals.

A three-time (2004-05, 2006-07, and 2007-08) NGCA All-America Honorable Mention pick, Hoffman totaled 10 top-20 place finish performances this campaign with three efforts being among the top five individuals. She was the individual medalist at the 2008 GLIAC Championships (April 20-21) in Arlington, Ohio, as she carded a first-place tying 226 three-round stroke total in regulation and then won a first-hole playoff.

Hoffman, who was twice (April 1 and 23) chosen as the GLIAC Women's Golf Athlete of the Week this campaign, placed in the top 10 in eight of the team's 13 tournaments this season. She tied for 12th-place honors at the 2008 NCAA-II East Regional (May 5-7) in Allendale, Mich., with a three-round 245 score as the Bulldogs took second place and then fired a 25th-place 310-stroke four-round total at the 2008 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships (May 13-16) in Houston, Texas. Ferris State, which was making its fifth consecutive national tournament appearance in the program's history, tallied a fourth-place finish with a 1,239 team score in the eight-team, 72-hole event.

Hoffman, a four-time (2004-08) All-GLIAC First-Team selection, completed a stellar four-year (2004-08) career at Ferris State by recording a school-record 78.31 stroke average (9,240 total strokes) in 118 rounds. The three-time (2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07) NGCA Scholar-Athlete All-American accumulated 40 top-20 place finishes in her career and produced 14 top-five place performances. A 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second-Team honoree, Hoffman earned 2004-05 GLIAC Women's Golf Freshman of the Year recognition and was the 2004-05 squad's Bulldog Award recipient.

Raquel Hansen
Hansen registered an 80.31 stroke average (2,570 total strokes) this season in 32 rounds to finish with the team's fourth-best stroke average. She placed among the top 20 individual golfers in nine tournaments, which included four in the top five.

A three-time (2005-08) second-team All-GLIAC performer, Hansen was the Bulldogs' top finisher in four tournaments this season - Ferris State Bulldog Invitational (Sept. 1-2), Olivet Invitational (Sept. 21-22), Northwood Invitational (Sept. 28-29), and the NCAA-II East Regional. She was the individual medalist at the Olivet Invite with a two-round 152-stroke total and placed second at the Northwood Invite after carding a 148 score in the 36-hole tourney.

Hansen, a two-time (2005-06 and 2006-07) NGCA Scholar-Athlete All-America pick, turned in a three-round 233 score at the 2008 NCAA-II East Regional to tie for runner-up honors and finished the campaign with a 38th-place tying 325-stroke total at the 2008 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships. As a result of her top-five place effort at regionals, Hansen was named to the 2007-08 NGCA All-East Region Team.

In her three-year (2005-08) career, Hansen is currently eighth on the program's all-time stroke leaders list with a 80.36 career average (6,268 total strokes) in 78 rounds. She has amassed 18 career top-20 place finishes with eight occuring in the top 10.
