FERRIS STATE WINS 2006 GLIAC CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
Bulldogs Place Four Golfers In Top 10; Robles Finishes Second

The Ferris State women's golf team grabbed the first-round lead Saturday (April 22) and never relinquished the top-place position as the Bulldogs fired rounds of 308 and 304 in Sunday's (April 23) final-round action to win the 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships with a 913 team score.
The 54-hole event was held at the par 72, 5,869-yard Currie West Golf Course in Midland, Mich.
Ferris finished three strokes in front of second-place Grand Valley State (916) while host Northwood claimed third (964) and Ashland claimed fourth place (992). The Bulldogs, who had finished second at the GLIAC Championships the last three years, won their first conference title since the 2001-02 season when FSU posted a two-round 658 score at GVSU's The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
Senior Elena Robles paced the Bulldogs with a second-place five-over-par 221 score (73-74-74--221), which was four strokes behind Northwood's Jamie Long's 217-stroke total for top individual medalist honors.
Sophomore Missy Ward recorded a 230 score (75-78-77--230, +14) to place fourth while junior Casey McKinnon (78-80-75--233, +17) and freshman Meghan Hunter (75-78-80--233, +17) both placed in a four-way tie for seventh.
Sophomore Becky Hoffman achieved a tie for 14th place after carding a 239 (83-78-78--239, +23). Freshman Raquel Hansen shot a 244 (82-78-84--244, +28) which tied her with one other for 17th place.
Freshman Alison Meyer, who competed as a non-scoring individual, placed 13th with a 238 score (82-78-78--238, +22) and junior Sam Wideman gained a share of 28th place by firing a 256 (86-84-86--256, +40) in a non-scoring capacity.
