FERRIS STATE MEN’S GOLFER GARNERS ALL-AMERICA HONOR

Mitch Flemming Named To NCAA Division II PING All-America Third Team

Mitch Flemming
Junior Mitch Flemming (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) of the Ferris State University men’s golf team has been named to the 2001-02 NCAA Division II PING All-America Third Team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Flemming was one of eight individuals to achieve third-team All-America laurels and was the only representative from a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member institution to earn recognition on one of the four teams. Flemming’s selection marks the second straight season a Ferris State men’s golf team member has attained All-America honors as senior Christoph Spora (Bell/See, Austria/Hib Saalfelden) garnered second-team kudos last season. Rollins College (Fla.), the 2002 NCAA-II National Champions, had five individuals gain All-America accolades including two first-team selections.

The GCAA All-America Committee selected the All-Americans based upon their outstanding play over the course of the entire 2001-02 season, including the NCAA Championships. To be selected to one of the PING All-America teams, a player must be named to one of the PING All-Region teams or finish in the top 15 at the NCAA Championships. The GCAA, which was established in 1958, is the professional association of collegiate men’s golf coaches. The non-profit organization is dedicated to educating, promoting and recognizing both its members and the student-athletes who participate in collegiate golf at all levels. Through its established events and programs, the GCAA maintains a goal of increasing awareness and the status of men’s collegiate golf.

Flemming, who repeated as an All-GLIAC First-Team pick this season, posted a team and personal career-best 74.1 stroke average (1,927 total strokes) in 26 rounds this season while claiming top tournament individual medalist honors on three occasions – NCAA-II District IV Tourney I (Sept. 23-24), NCAA-II District IV Tourney II (March 23-24) and Findlay-Alltel Invitational (April 6-7). He paced the Bulldogs at the NCAA-II Great Lakes/Central Super Regional with a second-place tying 69-stroke total. Flemming, a 2001-02 GLIAC All-Academic selection, was both a PING All-Great Lakes Region Team and Cleveland Golf GCAA All-America Scholar-Team honoree for the 2001-02 campaign.

For his three-year FSU career, Flemming has recorded a 74.9 stroke average (4,795 total strokes) in 64 rounds. He has won or shared top individual medalist honors six times in his career and led the Bulldogs with an eighth-place finish (290 score) at the 2000 NCAA-II National Championships in Turlock, Calif.

Ferris State recently made its 10th NCAA-II Championship appearance in the program’s history and placed 13th in the 18-team field with a four-round 1,238-stroke total at the 40th annual NCAA-II Championships in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Bulldogs claimed their 17th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship title earlier this season (Oct. 5-6) with a first-place showing at the GLIAC Championships in Ashland, Ohio.
