The Ferris State men's golf team compiled a 289 score in Saturday's (April 23) final-round play to claim 15th place of 20 teams with a three-round 870-stroke total at the 43rd annual Brigham Young PING Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah.

Ferris' three-round score represents a school record for the lowest 54-hole total, eclisping 879 which was set on two occasions -- at the 1998 GLIAC Championships (Oct. 2-3) and at the 1999 NCAA North Regional (May 3-5).

The Bulldogs, who were the tourney's only NCAA Division II participant, posted scores of 295 and 286 in Friday's (April 22) first two rounds and then shot a 289 for a 870 total (+6) on the par 72, 6,950-yard Riverside Country Club course. Fresno State carded an 820 (272-271-277--820, -44) to place first while host Brigham Young took second-place honors with a 828 score (-36). Colorado State, the 2004 tourney champions, was third at 829 (-35) and San Diego State claimed fourth place after notching an 834 score (-30).

Sophomore Alex Balog was the Bulldogs' top individual by finishing in a seven-way tie for 37th place with a 215 score (73-73-69--215, -1), which tied him for fourth place among FSU's all-time lowest 54-hole total leaders.

Sophomores Jeff Carlson (79-67-73--219, +3) and Kyle Mason (72-70-77--219, +3) both tied for 55th while senior Aaron Brown totaled a 220 (73-76-71--220, +4) to garner a 64th-place tying effort. Carlson's 67 second-round score marked a tie for the seventh-best 18-hole performance in the program's all-time annals.

Junior Todd Griffin rounded out the scoring for Ferris with a 235-stroke total (77-82-76--235, +19), which tied him for 98th place.
