Seniors Mitch Flemming (St. Clair Shores/Lakeview) and Jason Brustad (Hillsboro, N.D/Jamestown CC) of the Ferris State University men’s golf team have been chosen the 2002-03 season recipients for the team’s Most Valuable Player and Bulldog Awards, respectively. The announcement was made by fourth-year FSU head coach Brad Bedortha.

Flemming, who was both a NCAA Division II PING All-America Third Team and Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar selection in 2001-02, presently leads the Bulldogs with a 75.4 stroke average in 24 total rounds this season. The FSU team captain has registered seven top 10 individual finishes this campaign, including a pair of top five efforts – second-place tie at the Ferris State Fall Invitational (Sept. 13-14) and a third-place tie at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships (Oct. 5-6). He has paced the Bulldogs in four tournaments this season – Ferris State Fall Invitational, GLIAC Championships, NCAA-II National Preview (Oct. 14-15) and NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Qualifier Tournament (April 20-21). A two-time (2000-02) All-GLIAC First-Team pick, Flemming led Ferris State a season ago with a career-best 74.1 stroke average in 26 rounds. For his career, the three-time (1999-02) GLIAC All-Academic honoree has recorded a 75.1 career average in 88 rounds. He has won or shared top individual medalist honors at a tournament six times in his career and led the Bulldogs with an eighth-place 290 score at the 2000 NCAA-II National Championships in Turlock, Calif.

Brustad was named the recipient of the Bulldog Award, which is presented on an annual basis to a men’s golf team member who has demonstrated the most dedication and hard work during a season. In his initial campaign with the Bulldogs, Brustad has currently averaged 78.3 strokes in eight total rounds and presently ranks eighth among the team’s stroke average leaders. He posted a personal season-best fifth-place performance at the Findlay Invitational (April 5-6) as a result of carding a two-round 150 score.

Ferris State will be making its 11th NCAA-II National Championship appearance at the 2003 NCAA-II Championships, which will be held May 20-23 at the Sunriver Resort’s Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore.
