FSU GOLF TEAM ACHIEVES THIRD STRAIGHT TOURNAMENT CROWN
|Kurt Valley fired a two-round 145 to claim medalist honors for the second consecutive time.
The Ferris State men's golf team won its third straight tournament to date as the Bulldogs fired a two-round 593 score to capture top team honors at the Northwood Invitational this weekend (April 10-11) in Midland, Mich.
Ferris State recorded rounds of 298 and 295 to claim first place among nine participants on the par 72, 7,056-yard Currie West Golf Course. The Bulldogs finished 12 strokes ahead of second-place Wayne State (605).
For the second consecutive tournament, junior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) garnered top individual medalist honors with a first-place 145 score (73-73=145, +1). Junior Pat Steffes (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Spring) shared runner-up honors by shooting a 146 (73-73=146, +2) while fellow junior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) recorded a ninth-place tying 150-stroke total (76-74=150, +6).
Senior Kelbi Lee's (Billings, Mont.) 155 score (79-76=155, +11) tied him for 19th place and redshirt freshman Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) turned in a 156 score (76-80=156, +12) to place in a five-way tie for 23rd-place honors.
Freshman Greg Meisner (Waterford/Kettering) produced a fourth-place tying 148-stroke total (73-75=148, +4) as a non-scoring individual. Senior Brian Janty (Madison, Wis./West), who also participated in a non-scoring capacity, turned in a 149 (75-74=149, +5) to tie for sixth place. Sophomore Shane Swanson (Flushing/Flint Powers Catholic), competing in his first tourney as a Bulldog, generated a 153 score (80-73=153, +9) to gain a share of 15th place.
Prior to winning the Northwood Invitational title, Ferris State had taken first-place honors at both the Ashland Invitational (March 28-29) and NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell (April 4-5).
