MEN'S GOLF WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE TOURNAMENT TITLE
|Ferris State's Kurt Valley brought home the individual title at the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell as the Bulldogs claimed their second consecutive tournament title.
The Ferris State men's golf team turned in a first-place performance for the second straight tournament as the Bulldogs won the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament II-The Jewell Sunday (April 5) with a two-round 565 team score.
FSU compiled rounds of 285 on Saturday (April 4) and then followed with a final-round 280 score in Sunday's (April 5) action on the par 72 Cherry Blossom Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky., to finish 11 strokes under par. Grand Valley State and Indianapolis both tied for second -place honors with nine-over-par 567 scores while Wayne State fired an even par 576 to claim fourth place.
The first-place showing marked the second straight for Ferris State, which won the Ashland (Ohio) Invitational a week ago (March 28-29) with a three-round 879 team stroke total. The Bulldogs received mention in the latest (April 1) Golf World/Nike Golf Division II Coaches' Poll with 14 points and were listed among other teams receiving votes.
Junior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) was the tourney's medalist as he carded a first-place 133 score (68-65=133, -11). Junior Eric Lilleboe's (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) 141 score (71-70=141, -3) tied him for ninth place while senior Kelbi Lee (Billings, Mont.) produced a 22nd-place tying 145-stroke total (72-73=145, +1).
Redshirt freshman Garrett Simons' (Grand Ledge) was among eight players to gain a share of 26th place by notching a 146 score (74-72=146, +2). Junior Pat Steffes (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Spring) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with a seven-over-par 151 (74-77=151), which tied him for 58th place.
