Following a lackluster showing in its last tournament action, the Ferris State men's golf team turned up its play at Monday's (Sept. 17) Grand Valley State Laker Invitational to place second with a two-round 600 team score on the par 71, 7,034-yard The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
The Bulldogs finished two strokes in back of Grand Valley State's Blue Team which carded a 598 (303-295=598). Ferris State started off strong by tallying a tourney-tying best 299 opening-round score and then posted a 301-stroke total to claim second place in the 11-team tourney field.
Wayne State (604), Saginaw Valley State (606), and Findlay (613) comprised the remainder of the top five-place team finishers.
Senior Matt Erickson and junior Derek Shelburne both tied for third place with 149 scores. Erickson turned in rounds of 68 and 81 while Shelburne produced a 78 followed by a 71. Erickson's stroke total was just two shy of matching his career-best 147 at the Ashland (Ohio) Invitational last season (4/13-14) in which he earned top individual medalist honors.
Sophomore Kurt Valley fired a 151 (75-76=151) to garner a tie for 10th place. Sophomore Eric Lilleboe finished third on the Ferris scorecard with a 154 (78-76=154).
Redshirt freshman Joe Brown closed out the scoring for the Bulldogs by posting a 33rd-place tying 158 score (80-78=158).
Junior Brian Janty tied Brown by shooting a 158 (80-78=158) as a non-scoring individual while freshman Jack Tunge wound up in a 51st-place tie as a result of tallying a 163-stroke total (83-80=163).
