Jeff Carlson Earns Team Most Valuable Player Honors

Team MVP Award Winner
Jeff Carlson
Senior Jeff Carlson finished his productive four-year career at Ferris State by being named the 2006-07 team's Most Valuable Player.
Senior Jeff Carlson (Holland/West Ottawa) has been named the Most Valuable Player for the 2006-07 Ferris State University men's golf team as announced by eighth-year head coach Brad Bedortha.

The program's other annual award, the Bulldog Award, went to junior Matt Erickson (DePere, Wis.). The Bulldog Award is given to the FSU men's golf team member who displays the most dedication and hard work.

Carlson averaged a career single-season best 74.59 strokes per round (2,163 total strokes) over 29 rounds this season. The 2006-07 second-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) selection registered nine top-20 place finishes, which included three among the top five. He led the Bulldogs in four tournaments this campaign with one being a first-place 206-stroke total at the 2007 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Super Regional (May 7-9) in Joplin, Mo. Ferris State posted a first-place finish with a 864 team score in the 54-hole tourney to qualify for the 45th annual NCAA-II Championships (May 22-25) in Allendale, Mich., where the Bulldogs placed 17th by carding a four-round 1,245-stroke total. Carlson was Ferris' top performer at the NCAA-II Championships as he fired a 305 four-round score to tie for 43rd place.

Carlson, who achieved All-Great Lakes Region Team accolades as a result of claiming medalist honors at the 2007 NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, was a 2005-06 All-GLIAC First-Team pick after garnering honorable mention all-conference recognition the previous two seasons (2003-04 and 2004-05).

A co-winner of the squad's Bulldog Award for the 2003-04 season, Carlson concluded his four-year career with a 75.64 stroke average (8,094 total strokes) in 107 rounds. He placed among the top 20 on 26 occasions and was in the top five six times. Carlson was Ferris' top individual finisher in eight tournaments during his career.

Erickson averaged a career-best 77.06 strokes per round (1,310 total strokes) in 17 rounds for the 2006-07 season. He compiled four top-20 place finishes with two being top-five performances. Erickson was recognized as the GLIAC Men's Golf Athlete of the Week earlier this spring (April 17) after capturing medalist honors in a playoff win at the Ashland Invitational (April 13-14) following a two-round 147 score and then turned in a team-best fifth-place tying 153-stroke total at the Findlay Outback Steakhouse Invitational (April 15-16).

In his two-year career at Ferris State, Erickson has averaged 77.33 strokes (1,624 total strokes) through 21 rounds.

The two played a key part in helping the Bulldogs earn their fifth straight NCAA-II Great Lakes Super Regional berth and making their 12th NCAA-II Championship appearance in the program's history. FSU finished the 2006-07 season among other teams receiving votes in the Golf World/Nike Golf Men's Division II Coaches' Poll.
