FERRIS GOLFERS FINISH SEVENTH AT NCAA GREAT LAKES REGIONAL
Derek Shelburne Paces Bulldogs In Season-Finale Tournament
|Derek Shelburne had the best performance for the Bulldogs with a 225 score to finish tied for 16th place overall.
The Ferris State men's golf team concluded its 2005-06 season this Wednesday (May 3) at the 2006 NCAA Division II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional as the Bulldogs finished seventh place in the final team standings.
The Bulldogs, who were making their fourth straight Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance, concluded post-season action with a three-round 902-team score (+38) on the par 72, 6,893-yard Prairie Bluff Golf Club course in Lockport, Ill. FSU posted a final-round 305 score after registering scores of 300 and 297 in the first two rounds, respectively.
Ferris State, which was seeded second, finished one stroke in back of both Northwood (901, +37) and Indianapolis (901, +37) for fifth place while Bellarmine (903, +39) ended up a single stroke behind the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Derek Shelburne was Ferris' highest finisher for the third straight tournament as he fired a three-round 225 score (74-73-78--225, +9) to tie three others for ninth place. Seniors Derek Radley (77-76-74--227, +11) and Todd Griffin (73-78-76--227, +11) each tied for 21st-place honors.
Junior Kyle Mason, who was tied for 10th place entering the final round, shot an 82 en route to compiling a three-round 230-stroke total (78-70-82--230, +14) and finished in a three-way 31st-place tie. Junior Jeff Carlson wound up in the 40th-place spot as a result of producing a 233 score (76-80-77--233, +17).
A season ago, the Bulldogs tied for fourth place at the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional in St. Joseph, Mo., by notching a three-round 915 score.
Saginaw Valley State, the 2005-06 GLIAC Champions, claimed first-place honors with an 883 score (+19) and earned the only Great Lakes Region berth into the 2006 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships (May 16-19) at Daniels, W.Va.
