FERRIS AD NAMED TO NCAA-II NATIONAL FOOTBALL COMMITTEE
Tom Kirinovic Appointed To Serve On Committee Overseeing NCAA-II Football
Ferris State University and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) will be represented nationally on an important committee overseeing NCAA Division II football as current FSU Athletics Director Tom Kirinovic was recently appointed to serve on the NCAA-II National Football Committee.
Kirinovic, who has served on the regional committee in the past, was tabbed to replace Butch Raymond on the national committee from Super Regional Three this fall.
"Tom has a great background of serving on NCAA committees, including the football regional ranking committee, making him well-deserving of this appointment," said GLIAC Commissioner Tom Brown. "He has represented the GLIAC excellently in his past appointments and we are pleased to have him representing the conference in his new capacity."
His appointment comes at a time in which the NCAA has adjusted the way regions are named for selection purposes. Previously labeled geographically, regions have now been renamed “super regionals” and are categorized numerically so as to not create confusion with the geographically-based labels in Division II’s regionalization model. Thus, effective with the 2008 championship, the four “super regionals” for football selection purposes are: Super Regional One (composed of the Atlantic and East regions), Super Regional Two (South and Southeast regions), Super Regional Three (Central and Midwest regions) and Super Regional Four (South Central and West regions).
The national committee consists of eight members and each member represents a different member conference or independent institution. The other current committee members consist of Minnesota State-Mankato Athletics Director Kevin Buisman (Chair), Gannon University AD Bill Elias, Southern Arkansas AD Jay Adcox, shepherd (W.Va.) head football coach Monte Cater, Mars Hill (N.C.) head coach Timothy Clifton, head coach William Maskill of Midwestern State (Texas) along with Central Missouri Associate Athletics Director Shawn Jones. Kirinovic's term will expire in September 2010 and he is eligible for reappointment.
Committee members participate in weekly regional advisory and national committee conference calls from August through December, serve as an NCAA game representative at preliminary-round playoff games and attend the Division II Football Championship in a work-related capacity during the month of December. They also must attend an annual meeting during the month of February.
A member of Ferris' athletics staff for 25 years, Kirinovic has previously served on several other national and regional committees including the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee and the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Basketball Ranking Committee. He also served as the GLIAC's President during the 2005-06 athletics season.
"It is an extreme honor to be able to represent Ferris State University and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on this prestigious national football committee," Kirinovic said. "The high level of play in our region makes it very exciting to be able to help determine who the best teams are not only in this region but across the country.
"I appreciate the support of our staff to allow me to serve the NCAA in this manner."
Kirinovic was appointed athletics director at Ferris State University on November 29, 1999. and is responsible for overseeing the Bulldogs’ 15-sport intercollegiate athletics program. He previously served as associate athletics director since August 1994 and had been appointed interim athletics director in mid-July 1999.
A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Kirinovic also holds membership in the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administration (NACMA), the Big Rapids (Mich.) Lions Club and is a past chair of the Mecosta-Osceola United Way Drive along with being a past president of the Big Rapids Public Schools’ Board of Education.
Kirinovic also currently serves as the GLIAC representative on the board of the DII Athletic Director's Association.
