The Ferris State University Athletics Department recently contributed numerous canned food items to help needy local families through an effort with Project Starburst in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris State men's basketball head coach Bill Sall and senior guard Antwuan Holt (Okemos) distributed nearly 70 canned food items, which were donated by fans attending the school's athletics events, to Project Starburst volunteers.
In addition, the Bulldog men's ice hockey program represented by head coach Bob Daniels also donated over 200 canned food items collected to project coordinators. The 200 items were then matched by a $200 gift certificate from the local Meijer store in Big Rapids, which was represented by store manager Tim Zehr.
"We're proud to be able to offer a helping hand to those in need at this special time of year," said FSU Events, Facilities and Marketing Manager Mike Haggerty. "Project Starburst is a great cause and we're happy we've been able to help out those who are less fortunate.
"We're also extremely proud to be able to team up with Meijer and thank them for their outstanding support."
Project Starburst is a local organization providing emergency aid to those in need. Volunteers help sort and store food donated by various community groups, organize food drives and distribute the collected food. For more information on Project Starburst or to volunteer, please call 796-5342.
