BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY AT FERRIS STATE FOOTBALL GAME
The Ferris State University Athletics Department will be holding a Breast Cancer Awareness Day in conjunction with the Ferris State football's home-finale contest against Northwood University this Saturday (Oct. 29) at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich. A 1 p.m (EDT) start time for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game is scheduled.
Breast cancer survivors of West Michigan have been invited to attend the event as guests of the athletics department for the afternoon. They will be participating in a pre-game tailgate starting at 10 a.m. (EDT), which is being provided courtesy of the Mecosta County Medical Center and the Ferris State University Catering department.
"One of the life lessons in athletics is overcoming obstacles. Certainly, survivors of breast cancer have overcome one of the greatest obstacles anyone could be faced with," said Ferris State Athletics Director Tom Kirinovic.
"We're proud to be able to recognize the victories of these individuals and help raise the awareness factor that is so critical in early detection of this dreadful disease," he added.
As a part of the event, pink ribbons and fact sheets on breast cancer will be handed out at the gates. Also, both the Ferris State and Northwood football teams will be wearing emblems on their helmets representing the pink ribbon, which is the universally recognized symbol of breast cancer awareness.
Suzie Pierce, an event organizer and wife of Ferris State football head coach Jeff Pierce, is excited about the event.
"I think it is important to acknowledge and support the survivors of breast cancer and I'm pleased to see that Ferris State Athletics has scheduled this event in October during National Breast Cancer Awareness month," she said.
Pierce also praised the support of the event's sponsors.
"The additional support has been outstanding in terms of the luncheon provided by the donations of FSU Catering and Mecosta County Medical Center," she said.
Pierce also touched on the importance of the event to the community.
"This is a good opportunity to reach a large number of people of a variety of ages in one setting to help them become more aware of breast cancer and the importance of early detection and treatment," said Pierce.
All members of the community are encouraged to attend this event. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children and may be purchased at the gate.
