SUEANN WALZ SELECTED 2004-05 “PETE PETERSON PRIDE AWARD” HONOREE

Local Community Member Honored For Her Numerous Contributions To Ferris State Athletics
Sueann WalzSueann Walz has been selected as the 2004-05 recipient of the “Pete Peterson Pride Award”, which is presented annually by the Ferris State University Athletics Department. The award, which is named in honor of former Ferris State Athletics Director and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioner Pete Peterson (1964-79), is presented to an individual who has demonstrated loyalty and unselfish support of Bulldog Athletics. The award, which was reinstated following the 2002-03 athletics season after a seven-year absence, recognizes outstanding service and support from those outside the athletics department staff. Recipients to be considered are alumni, community members, university faculty or staff member, fan.

Walz, who presently is the Assistant Vice President and Manager for the Big Rapids Branch at Independent Bank, along with her husband (Kenneth) have been longtime supporters of Ferris State University. Walz is a current member of the Ferris Foundation, Friends of Ferris and the Bulldog Men's Ice Hockey Scholarship Endowment Campaign, which actively seeks people to endow hockey scholarships. Walz is presently on the Ferris Foundation’s Board of Directors and is the current president of the Friends of Ferris, a political action group supporting the University of which she has been on its executive board for 14 years. Walz along with her husband recently established a hockey scholarship endowment fund to cover a renewable scholarship for a Ferris varsity hockey player in good academic standing.

A 33-year Independent Bank employee, Walz served as a co-chair of the Ferris Bulldog Hockey Locker Room fundraising campaign and has been an active member of the Mecosta County Chamber of Commerce where she was the organization’s president in 1996. Walz, who was honored with the FSU Blue Line Club Recognition Award for the 1998-99 season, has been involved with the men’s ice hockey program at Ferris State dating back to the early 1970’s when the sport was a club team before receiving varsity status.

“Sueann is extremely deserving of the Pete Peterson Pride Award,” said Ferris State Men's Ice Hockey Head Coach Bob Daniels. “Not only is she a good friend and supporter of Ferris State Hockey and Athletics, but she is also a tremendous supporter of Ferris State University as a whole. Moreover, she has done this over a long period of time donating her talents, time and effort in her persuit of advancing the interests of Ferris State University.”
