HAWKINS NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE “PETE PETERSON PRIDE AWARD”
Former FSU Hockey Blue Line Club President Recognized For His Numerous Contributions
The Ferris State University Athletics Department has selected Dick Hawkins as the 2002-03 recipient of the annual “Pete Peterson Bulldog Pride Award”.
The award, named for the former Ferris State Athletics Director and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioner Pete Peterson (1964-79), is presented to an individual who has demonstrated loyalty and unselfish support of Bulldog Athletics. The award, which was reinstated this season after a seven-year absence, recognizes outstanding service and support from those outside the athletics department staff. Recipients to be considered are alumni, community members, university faculty or staff member, fan.
Hawkins, who retired from FSU this spring and now lives near Roanoke, Va., is a past president of the Ferris State Hockey’s Blue Line Club and most recently served as the club’s membership chairperson. During his tenure as chair, membership in the FSU Blue Line Club more than doubled. Hawkins also assisted the Bulldog hockey program as an off-ice official, serving as a goal judge, timekeeper and statistician. Furthermore, he produced annually an extensive notebook which featured news clippings, articles and etc. on the Ferris State hockey program during its respective seasons.
An associate dean in FSU’s College of Business, Hawkins volunteered his time as an academic coordinator to visiting student-athlete recruits and offered guidance to those individuals interested in attending Ferris State.
“Dick always made time for current student-athletes and also future students,” said Ferris State Men’s Ice Hockey Head Coach Bob Daniels. “I know that I speak for the entire campus community when I say that Dick’s talents will be missed at Ferris State University.”
