GUSTAFSON SELECTED AS 2007-08 PETERSON PRIDE AWARD RECIPIENT
Ferris State Alumnus And Statistician Recognized For Longtime Contributions
Stanley Gustafson, a current Ferris State football statistician and hockey season ticket holder, has been selected as the 2007-08 season recipient of the FSU Athletics Department's annual "Pete Peterson Pride Award."
The Pete Peterson Pride Award is named in honor of former Ferris State Athletics Director and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioner Pete Peterson (1964-79). The award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated loyalty and unselfish support of Bulldog Athletics. The award, which was reinstated following the 2002-03 athletics season after a seven-year absence, recognizes outstanding service and support from those outside the athletics department staff. Coaches and athletics department staff nominate individuals to be considered which are selected from alumni, community members, university faculty or staff member, and a fan. A committee from the administration staff of intercollegiate athletics, as appointed by the athletics director's office determines the award recipient.
Stan "The Statman" Gustafson, who presently is employed as a senior systems analyst within the information technology department at Metro Health Hospital in Wyoming, Mich., completed his 19th year this past fall as a statistician for Bulldog home football games and has been a Ferris State hockey season ticket order for 18 seasons dating back to the 1990-91 campaign.
A Ferris State alumnus, Gustafson has also been a loyal financial supporter of the university. Gustafson has participated in annual giving the last 17 years, both for academics and athletics. He was among several individuals to make a financial contribution for the construction of the Wheeler Pavilion, which serves as the president's box, press box, and ticket office at Top Taggart Field on the FSU campus.
In his final academic year (1990-91) as a FSU undergraduate, Gustafson worked as a statistician in the Ferris State sports information office under longtime director Ted Halm covering six Bulldog athletic teams - football, women's volleyball, hockey, baseball, men's basketball, and women's basketball). In baseball, the Bulldogs were Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champions all four years in which Gustafson served as a statistician.
Along with his service to Ferris State, Gustafson also served as statistics keeper for both the now defunct Grand Rapids (Mich.) Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League (AFL). He worked Arenabowl XV which the Rampage won in 2001 and also the 1993 CBA League Championship series in which the Hoops dropped a six-game series to Omaha by a four-to-two games margin.
Gustafson graduated from Ferris State in 1991 with highest honors. He earned a dual bachelor's of science degree in accountancy and computer information systems.
Gustafson, a native of Cadillac, Mich., is the 20th individual to receive the "Pete Peterson Pride Award" since its inception following the conclusion of the 1981-82 athletics season.
